Walter R. Grycko, 93, a resident of Swoyersville, was peacefully called to the Lord on Thursday afternoon, August 15, 2024, at Allied Services Hospice Center, Wilkes-Barre.
Born on December 28, 1930, in Swoyersville, Walter was the son of the late Walter Grycko and Anna Madar Grycko.
A United States Coast Guard veteran, Walter honorably served his country for three years during the Korean War. During his time of service, he was stationed in San Diego, California; Groton, Connecticut; and the Saint George Coast Guard Station, Staten Island, New York.
Walter was a master carpenter and craftsman by trade, building 11 homes for his family and friends in the Swoyersville area and Florida. In his later years, he went on to receive his certified nursing assistant certification, working for the former Valley Crest Nursing Home, Wilkes-Barre, until his retirement.
A faithful, devout Catholic, Walter was a lifelong member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Holy Trinity Church, Swoyersville, where he served as an usher for over 50 years and, in his younger years, was a member of its Holy Name Society. He was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Assumpta Council 3987, Kingston, serving as its treasurer, and was a 4th degree member of its Our Lady of Czestochowa Assembly 1928, Kingston.
In addition to his parents, Walter and Anna, Walter was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Shedlarski Grycko; his second wife, Dorothy Bednar Grycko; his sons, infant Stephen and Walter Stephen Grycko; and his brothers, Frank Golembieski and Daniel Grycko.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Gloria Jean Bilder and favorite son-in-law, Edward J. Jr., Harveys Lake and Florida; daughter-in-law, Johnna Grycko, Altoona; three grandchildren, Adam Bilder and wife, Janine, Fort Myers, Florida; Stacey Davis and husband, Ben, Altoona; and Ashley Grycko, Altoona; two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Addison Davis; brother-in-law, Dr. Joseph Shedlarski; step-grandchildren, Saundra Colwell; Christina Vogel and husband, Msgt. Andrew; and Edward J. Bilder III; step-great-grandchildren, Rebecca Putnam and husband, Chris; Alorah McBride and husband, K.J.; Lily and Drew Vogel; Elena, Edward J. IV, Laina, Luca, Jocelyn, and Elliot Bilder; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend their most sincere gratitude to the nurses and staff at Allied Services Hospice Center for the compassionate and attentive care they bestowed upon Walter during his final days.
Relatives and Friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral which will be conducted on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at 9:30 AM, from the Wroblewski Funeral Home, Inc., 1442 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 AM in Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, 116 Hughes Street, Swoyersville, with the Reverend Father Louis A. Grippe, family friend, officiating.
Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in Mount Olivet Roman Catholic Cemetery, Carverton section of Kingston Township, where Military Honors will be accorded by the United States Coast Guard.
Family and friends are invited to attend Walter’s viewing which will be held on Friday, August 23, 2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, at the funeral home.
