Stephanie “Steffie” Toton Stefanides, formerly of Swoyersville, passed away on Friday afternoon, May 21, 2021, at the age of 95, at Kingston Health Care Center, Kingston, where she was a guest for the past year and a half.
Her husband was the late Daniel Stefanides who was killed in the Knox Mine Disaster on January 22, 1959. After 62 years, 3 months, 29 days, Steffie was reunited in heaven with the love of her life.
Born on March 30, 1926, in the Mayflower section of Wilkes-Barre, Steffie was one of five children born to the late Michael and Karolina Tanzer Toton.
Raised in Wilkes-Barre, Steffie was a graduate of GAR Memorial High School, Class of 1945.
A homemaker most of her life, Steffie returned to the workforce when her youngest son was in high school, working in various manufacturing facilities, and retiring from Owens-Illinois, later Techniglas, Jenkins Township.
Steffie was a devout Catholic, and a longtime member of the former Holy Trinity Church, Swoyersville, where she held membership with its Confraternity of Christian Mothers and its Altar and Rosary Society. Active within her church, she volunteered at countless church functions, most notably its annual bazaar and semi-annual rummage sales. Following the consolidation of her church, she became a member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Swoyersville.
Steffie was also a member of the Ladies Pennsylvania Slovak Catholic Union, the Swoyersville Senior Citizens, and the Swoyersville “Young at Heart” Card Club. In her earlier years, she was an avid bowler.
Steffie was well known by family and friends for her “tart” which she made for special occasions, church fund raisers, and simply just because she enjoyed baking it.
In addition to her parents, Michael and Karolina Toton, and her husband, Daniel, Steffie was preceded in death by her sisters, Josephine Toton Kester and Helen Toton Clark; and her brothers, Paul “Paulie” Toton and Frank “Frankie” Toton.
Steffie is survived by her four children, Daniel (Michele) Stefanides Jr., Wellsboro, PA; Patricia (Thomas) Wesley, Hanover Township; Christine (James) Naughton, Allentown; and Michael (Marie) Stefanides, Forty Fort; her six grandchildren, Carrie Ann (Matthew) Stefanides Kitchen, Marietta; Attorney Daniel Stefanides, Mansfield; Christopher (Christy) Stefanides, Huntington, WV; Ryan (Nicole) Wesley, Wyoming; Stacey (Evan) Naughton Hasara, Arvada, CO; Lieutenant Shelby (Steven) Naughton Harders, MSC, USN, San Diego, CA; her eight great-grandchildren, Harper, Molly and Liam Kitchen; Watson Stefanides; Olivia, Brody and Calvin Wesley; and her namesake, five-month old, Steffie Hasara; her brother-in-law, Gerard Kester; her sister-in-law, Lothaine Stefanides; her best friends/“BFF’s”, Eleanor Hudak and Lorraine Stibgen; as well as her numerous nieces and nephews.
The children and grandchildren wish to extend their sincerest gratitude and appreciation for the wonderful care and compassion shown to Steffie by the staff at Kingston Health Care Facility since she began residing there, and most especially during the time of the COVID-19 restrictions.
