Stanley A. Polk, 87, a resident of Mountain Top, entered into eternal life unexpectedly on Tuesday afternoon, January 12, 2016, at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
His beloved wife was the late Emily (Sholtis) Polk, who passed away on September 14, 2010. Stanley and Emily were united in marriage on December 15, 1950, and together they shared nearly 60 years marriage.
Born on January 07, 1929, in Swoyersville, Stanley was one of fifteen children born to the late Walter (Pokrzywnicki) Polk, and Anna (Zukosky) Polk.
Raised in Swoyersville, Stanley was a graduate of the former Swoyersville High School, Class of 1947.
A United States Air Force Veteran, Stanley honorably served his country for four years during the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge on December 14, 1954, Stanley had attained the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Stanley went on to further his education at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he received both his Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science Degrees in Electrical Engineering. To this day, he maintained membership with the University of Maryland Alumni Association.
For thirty years, Stanley and his wife, Emily, resided in the Washington D.C. area. Throughout the years they resided there, Stanley was employed as an Electrical Engineer for the Federal Aviation Administration. Upon their retirement in 1984, the couple returned to Pennsylvania, settling in Mountain Top, where they lived happily together for the rest of their lives.
Stanley was a faithful member of Saint Jude’s Church, Mountain Top. In his earlier years, he was a member of the former Saint Mary of Czestochowa Church, Swoyersville, now consolidated with Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Swoyersville.
A proud veteran, Stanley was a life member of the American Legion, Andrew Lawrence Post 644, Swoyersville.
Professionally, Stanley held membership with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Association, the Airways Engineering Society, and the Federal Aviation Club of the Federal Aviation Administration.
Stanley was a skilled gardener who was most famous for his vegetable garden. He also enjoyed tending to his flower garden and his trees. He was also a talented mechanic who had knack for fixing just about anything, most especially cars.
Stanley and Emily greatly enjoyed attending their reunions with their former classmates from the Swoyersville High School classes of 1947 and 1948. They both cherished the lasting friendships they had with their childhood friends.
Family was the most important part of Stanley’s life and he treasured every moment he had with his loved ones. Holidays were always his favorite time for family gatherings, however, no matter if it was a holiday, special event or just an ordinary day, as long as his family was together, he was happy.
Although Stanley and Emily did not have children of their own, they both regarded their niece, Lynn Drobenak, and nephew, David Wayne Drobenak, as their adopted children. They also regarded their great-niece, Dana Drobenak, and great-nephew, Derek Drobenak, as their adopted grandchildren. They strived to be an intricate part of their nieces and nephews lives, and found it important to instill them with good values and excellent taste. They also emphasized the significance of having an education, and always trying to exceed in life.
In addition to his parents, Walter and Anna Polk, and his wife, Emily, Stanley was preceded in death by his brothers, John, Edward, Theodore, Frank, Walter, Chester, Aloysius, Leo, Benjamin, and Joseph Polk; his sisters, Helen Polk and Jean Bianco.
Stanley is survived by his sisters, Charlotte Pomicter, Sun City, California; and Ann Evans, Cypress, California; his sister-in-law, Rose Marie (Sholtis) Drobenak, Lakewood Ranch, Florida; his many nieces and nephews from the Polk and Sholtis families; as well as his extended family and friends.
