Sister Danielle Jankoviak, a Sister of Charity of Nazareth, known by many as Sister Helen, 89, a resident of Swoyersville, entered into eternal life on Monday evening, February 01, 2016, at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township.
Born on October 03, 1926, in Swoyersville, and given the name Helen T. Jankoviak, Sister Danielle was one of eight children born to the late Anthony and Mary (Butchko) Jankoviak.
Raised in Swoyersville, Sister Danielle received her early education at the former Holy Trinity Grade School, and was a graduate of the former Swoyersville High School.
Sister furthered her education at Mount Mercy College, Pittsburgh, where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She later went on to complete her graduate work at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh.
Sister Danielle recently celebrated her 66th year of religious life. Her service to God began when she entered into the Vincentian Sisters of Charity on October 04, 1949. She served the Diocese of Pittsburgh for 35 years in the teaching apostolate, teaching for 25 years at Saint Dominic School, Donora, Pennsylvania, where she later ministered as a Pastoral Minister.
In 1993, Sister returned to her family homestead in Swoyersville to care for her beloved brothers.
On November 15, 2008, she, along with her fellow Sisters, transferred their vows to the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.
Sister Danielle was a lifelong member of the former Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Swoyersville, which later consolidated into Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Parish, Swoyersville. Sister was a daily communicant and an active volunteer within her parish until her health no longer permitted her to do so.
Whenever asked to reflect on her life, Sister would always reply, “My life has been fulfilled.” Those powerful words will continue to resonate in the hearts of all those who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, Anthony and Mary Jankoviak, Sister Danielle was preceded in death by her brothers, John, George, Michael, Joseph and Anthony Jankoviak; her sisters, Mary Stanishefski and Elizabeth Raker.
