Roman A. “Rom” Ziegler Jr., 70, a resident of Swoyersville, passed into eternal life unexpectedly, surrounded by his loving family, on Thursday afternoon, July 27, 2023, at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. After dealing with a lifetime of health issues, he is finally free of his pain and suffering.
His loving wife is Dorothy Stuka Ziegler. Roman and Dorothy would have celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary on August 6th.
Born on October 10, 1952, in Kingston, Roman was one of four children born to the late Roman A. Ziegler Sr. and Elizabeth Brown Ziegler.
Raised in Plymouth, Rom was a member of the last graduating class of Saint Vincent de Paul High School, Plymouth. Following high school, he went on to further his education at Wilkes College, now Wilkes University, where, in 1974, he acquired his Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education.
Rom began a career in banking shortly after college starting with the former Plymouth National Bank, eventually transitioning to PNC Bank where he worked as a lead teller until his retirement due to his health.
Alongside his career in banking, Rom also served for many years as an accompanying organist at the former Saint Vincent de Paul Church, Plymouth, and Saint Mary Nativity Church, Plymouth, now All Saints Parish, playing at countless weddings at both those churches and other area churches.
A man of unbreakable faith, Rom was a devout member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Swoyersville, where he was an active volunteer with the parish’s annual bazaar when his health allowed him to do so. He was also a 3rd Degree honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus, Assumpta Council 3987, Kingston.
Never allowing his multiple sclerosis to stop him, Rom became an active volunteer at John Heinz Rehabilitation Center, Wilkes-Barre, where he devoted over 5,500 hours of service, and was honored several times as “Volunteer of the Month”.
Although Rom had many health issues, he faced them head on! He accepted his cancer diagnosis with courage, strength and determination. As his body weakened, every time it reoccurred, he remained optimistic – always accepting – never complaining. Throughout this long and hard battle, he never lost his sense of humor. Loved and admired by everyone whose life he touched, he will be missed by each and every one of them.
Rom had many enjoyments in life, most especially reading and cheering on his favorite baseball team, the New York Yankees, of whom he was a lifelong fan. Above all, family was the most important part of his life and he treasured every moment he shared with his loved ones. A proud “Grampy”, he always held a special place in his heart for his granddaughters, Emily and Madelyn.
In addition to his parents, Roman and Elizabeth Ziegler, Rom was preceded in death by his brothers-in-law, Robert Yashinski and Edward Krupinski.
Left to carry on his memory are his loving wife, Dorothy, and their children, David Ziegler, Plymouth; and Kimberly D’Aiello and her husband, John, Swoyersville; his granddaughters, Emily and Madelyn D’Aiello, both of Swoyersville; his brother, Deacon John “Jack” Ziegler and his wife, Karen, Swoyersville; his sisters, Margaret Yashinski, Maryland; and Betsy Thomas and her husband, George, South Carolina; his sisters-in-law, Diane Halliday and her husband, Donald, Dallas; and Andrea Krupinski, Swoyersville; as well as his nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to all of their friends and family members who offered their love and support throughout Rom’s illness. They wish to also thank Dr. David Greenwald and his nurses and staff at Medical Oncology Associates, Kingston; his family doctor, Dr. Gerald Gibbons; and the doctors from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for their outstanding care, compassion, and support over the years.
