Robert J. Stavish Sr., 83, a resident of Swoyersville and formerly of South Grant Street, Wilkes-Barre, passed into eternal life unexpectedly, yet peacefully on Sunday morning, August 29, 2021, in the comfort of his own home.
His loving wife is Carol Ann (Norkunas) Stavish. Together, Bob and Carol celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on August 24th.
Born on August 25, 1938, in Wilkes-Barre, Robert was one of two sons born to the late M. Robert and Angela (Podkul) Stavish.
Raised in the North-End section of Wilkes-Barre, Bob was a graduate of the former James M. Coughlin High School, Class of 1955. He went on to further his education at Kings College, Wilkes-Barre, where, in 1962, he acquired his Bachelors Degree in Business Administration with a minor in Accounting.
A veteran of the United States Army Reserves, Bob honorably served his country for six years, attaining the rank of Sergeant.
An accountant by trade, Bob started off early in life learning the valuable skills of the business world working for his family’s business, “Angela’s Pasties”, which his parents first started in their home, eventually opening a shop in North Wilkes-Barre. Bob went on to become employed as a plant accountant for RCA-GE-Fairchild Semiconductor, Mountaintop, retiring from there after 42 years.
Following his retirement, Bob began working as a registered tax preparer for H&R Block, eventually going into partnership with his eldest son, Robert Stavish Jr. CPA, for the past 30 years. He loved visiting with his clients during tax season and hearing all of their stories from the past year, along with sharing a few stories of his own. He also drove limousine for Rose Limousine Service, Hanover Township, during his retirement years.
A man of deep faith and trust in God, Bob was an active member of the former Holy Trinity Lithuanian Church, Wilkes-Barre, where he served as a lector and an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. He was also a member of its Holy Name Society, and served for many years on its finance council, eventually serving as its President until the church’s closing. After the closing, he became a member of Saint Nicholas Church, Wilkes-Barre, where he also served as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. He lived by the motto “Give to the church and you’ll always have a buck in your pocket”.
In his earlier years, he enjoyed playing the piano, as well as other instruments, and was a member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA).
Throughout his life, Bob had a passion for cars and was a true “Cadillac Man”. He was a member, past officer, and past director of the NEPR AACA Car Club. If you didn’t see Bob driving limousine, you could find him at car shows, cruises, parades, swap meets, and anywhere else fellow “car guys” would gather. He enjoyed volunteering at car shows and cruises, and always had a good car story to tell, as well as a lot of knowledge to share.
Bob’s family was the pride and joy in his life, and the love and adoration he had for his wife, children, and grandchildren was boundless. Although he loved each of his grandchildren equally, his eldest grandson, Michael, was his best buddy and “wheelman”, and he was so looking forward to being at his wedding that took place yesterday, September 4th.
Bob will be remembered for his genuine kindness; his true care and concern for others; and his gift of conversation. He left an indelible mark on the lives of many and his presence will be missed beyond words.
In addition to his parents, M. Robert and Angela Stavish, Bob was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Frank and Estelle Norkunas; and his brother-in-law, Francis Norkunas.
In addition to his wife, Carol, Bob is survived by his three children, Robert Stavish Jr., Scranton; Susan Stavish-O’Boyle and her husband, John, Forty Fort; and Joseph Stavish and his wife, Cathy, Lansdowne; his five grandchildren, Michael Stavish and his wife, Grace; Jack Stavish; Elena Stavish, John Stavish, and Edward Stavish; his brother, Leonard Stavish and his wife, Marie, New City, New York; his one nephew, three nieces, one great-nephew and great-nieces.
Relatives and Friends are respectfully invited to attend Bob’s Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 07, 2021, at 10:00 AM in Saint Nicholas Church, 226 South Washington Street, Wilkes-Barre. Monsignor John J. Sempa, family friend, will be the celebrant, and the Reverend Joseph D. Verespy, his Pastor, will be con-celebrant.
Private Interment with the Rite of Committal will immediately follow the funeral Mass in Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Cemetery, Bear Creek.
The viewing will be private for Bob’s immediate family and close friends.
Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Wroblewski Funeral Home, Inc., 1442 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort.
