Robert J. “Bob” Mies, 85, a resident of Swoyersville, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Monday morning, December 05, 2022, at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Inpatient Unit, Dunmore.
His loving wife is Angeline “Angie” Esgro Mies. Bob and Angie would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on January 10, 2023.
Born on June 10, 1937, in the home his father built on Dexter Avenue in Scranton, Bob was one of two children born to the late Joseph Mies and Celia Jagodzuiska Mies.
A graduate of Scranton Technical High School, Class of 1955, Bob also honorably served his country with United States Marine Corps Reserve.
Prior to his retirement in 1996, Bob was employed as a technician for Procter & Gamble, Mehoopany. Being one of its original hires in 1966, he boasted that he was employee number 104, and was known to be a hardworking man who could fix almost anything.
Bob was a member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Swoyersville. A faithful believer of our Lord God, he, along with his wife, prayed the Rosary and countless other prayers daily.
The ultimate family man, there was nothing Bob loved more than sitting around a table with his family – laughing, playing cards, or telling stories of growing up in Scranton surrounded by steam engines. He could rival most Jeopardy contestants, and his knowledge of American history was impressive. He loved his dogs, swimming, fishing, crossword puzzles, antique clocks, and Lionel train platforms. One thing that his family will miss most will be his famous pizza skills, as he would often make 25 pizza pies in one night to feed his entire family.
A natural athlete, Bob ran many foot races around the state and completed his first Marathon at the age of 42. He was known around the Clarks Summit and Mountain Top areas for playing aggressive full-court basketball, and he didn’t stop playing pick-up ball until he was 68 years old. In 2010, he was given the gift of life when his son, Joe, donated his kidney to him, granting his family 12 more years of memories!
In addition to his parents, Joseph and Celia Mies, Bob was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law who reared him, Dolores and Richard Farren; and by his two-year-old niece, Delores Farren.
In addition to his loving wife, Angie, Bob is survived his three beloved children, Robert Joseph Mies and his wife, Tammy, Old Forge; Joseph Mies and his wife, Kathryn, Duryea; and Judith Sedlak and her husband, Paul, Kingston. He was a proud grandfather to his nine grandchildren, Robbie Mies; Vera Sedlak; Jessica Stemper and her husband, Matthew; Andrew Mies and his fiancée, Ashley Smith; Marie Mies and her fiancé Andrew Cabello; Nikolai Sedlak and his wife, Desireé; Joshua Mies and his wife, Alyssa; Michael Mies; and Sarah Mies. He was equally a proud great-grandfather to his great-grandchild, Carson Sanders. He will also be missed by his nephew, Richie Farren, and his many other nieces and nephews, and friends.
Bob’s family would like to extend their sincerest thanks to the staff of Hospice of the Sacred Heart, as well as Dr. Raymond Joseph and his caring staff from Renal Consultants for the wonderful care they all bestowed upon Bob.
