Matthew T. Jacobs, retired Funeral Director, 87, a life-long resident of Wilkes-Barre, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, June 14, 2015, at the Golden Living Center, Summit Campus, Wilkes-Barre, where he was recently a guest.
His loving wife is Sandra L. (Walker) Jacobs. Together, Matt and Sandy celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary on March 15, 2015.
Born on January 23, 1928, in Wilkes-Barre, Matthew was the son of the late Matthew J. Jacobs and Ethel (Conway) Jacobs.
Raised in Wilkes-Barre, Matt attended E.L. Meyers High School, Wilkes-Barre.
A United States Navy veteran, Matt honorably served his country during the final months of World War II. He was decorated with the American Area Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged from active duty on December 10, 1947.
Matt was a graduate of the former Eckels School of Mortuary Science, Philadelphia, where he received his degree in Funeral Service.
Matt received his professional licensure with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1954, and shortly thereafter, he opened the Matthew T. Jacobs Funeral Home at 47 Old River Road, Wilkes-Barre, operating the business until his retirement in 2012.
Throughout his years in the funeral business, Matt held membership with the National Funeral Directors Association, the Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association, and the Luzerne County Funeral Directors Association.
In addition to his funeral business, Matt was also a motor coach driver for Martz Trailways for over 30 years. In 1981, Matt was honored to receive an award by then Governor Dick Thornburgh for his years of safe driving and being accident free.
Matt was a faithful Catholic and life-long member of the former Saint Therese R.C. Church, Wilkes-Barre, where he held membership with the parish’s Ushers Club. Following the closing of his church, he became a member of Saint Nicholas R.C. Church, Wilkes-Barre.
Active within the Wilkes-Barre community, Matt served on the Wilkes-Barre Area School Board from 1986 to 1990. Matt was also a longtime member of the Rotary Club of South Wilkes-Barre, with whom he served as President in 1976, and again in 1986. Additionally, he was the recipient of Rotary’s Paul Harris Fellowship Award.
Matt was an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 302, Wilkes-Barre, and was a 4th Degree member of the Bishop William J. Hafey Assembly 925, Wilkes-Barre.
In addition to his parents, Matthew and Ethel Jacobs, Matt was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy (Corbin) Jacobs, who passed away on March 07, 1983; his brother, John X. Jacobs; his sister, Rosemary Lynch; and most recently his niece, Erin “Fluff” Jacobs, who passed away on March 06, 2015.
In addition to his wife, Sandra, Matt is survived by his sons, Dr. Thomas Antrim and his wife, Carolyn, New Hampshire; and David Martin, California; his daughters, Barbara Marcelli and her husband, Dr. Rick, New Jersey; and Carolyn Martin, Mountaintop; his nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; his brother, Joseph Jacobs and his wife, Edith, Wilkes-Barre; his numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Relatives and Friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral which will be conducted on Friday, June 19, 2015, at 10:15 AM from the Wroblewski Funeral Home, Inc., 1442 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11:00 AM in Saint Nicholas Church, 226 South Washington Street, Wilkes-Barre, with Monsignor Joseph G. Rauscher, his Pastor, officiating.
Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township, where Military Honors will be accorded by the United States Navy.
Family and Friends are invited to call on Thursday, June 18, 2015, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, and again on Friday morning, from 9:00 to 10:00 AM, at the funeral home.
The Luzerne County Funeral Directors Association will assemble on Thursday evening at 6:00 PM.
