Matthew J. Pietryka, a resident of Old Forge, passed into eternal life on Saturday morning, October 10, 2020, at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Inpatient Unit, Dunmore.
Born on December 31, 1940, in Taylor, Matthew was one of six children born to the late Matthew and Anna (Butch) Pietryka.
Raised in Taylor, Matthew was a graduate of Taylor High School, Class of 1959.
Matthew was employed for 30 years as a foreman for Gold Star Manufacturing, Scranton, and then went on to work for Panel Prints, Old Forge, retiring from there.
A devout Catholic, Matthew was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Parish, Scranton. He was active for many years with the parish bazaars, and enjoyed pinching the pierogies for bazaars and parish fundraisers.
An avid sports enthusiast, Matthew was a great fan of the Boston Red Sox, the Penn State Nittany Lions, and Tiger Woods. Additionally, he enjoyed being a regular attendee of the Riverside High School football games, and was a former member of the Wapita Rod and Gun Club, Bradford County.
Matthew will forever be remembered as a loving and devoted brother, uncle, and great-uncle. He was so very proud of his family, and although his presence will be deeply missed, there is much joy in knowing he is free from his pain, and reunited in Heaven with all of his loved ones who have gone before him.
In addition to his parents, Matthew and Anna Pietryka, Matthew was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Pietryka, who passed away on July 17, 2000; and his nephew, Theodore J. Pietryka Jr., who passed away on November 30, 2017.
Matthew is survived by his sister and devoted caregiver, Karen Kumor and her husband, Alan, with whom Matthew resided with; his brothers, Theodore J. Pietryka Sr. and his wife, Audrey, West Wyoming; Myron Pietryka and his wife, Marie, Scranton; and Joseph Pietryka, Scranton; his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to the nurses and staff at Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the compassionate care they bestowed upon Matthew during his time of need.
Relatives and Friends are respectfully invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated on Thursday, October 15, 2020, at 9:30 AM, in Ss. Peter and Paul Parish, 1309 West Locust Street, Scranton, with the Reverend Samuel J. Ferretti, his Pastor, officiating.
Private interment with the Rite of Committal for the immediate family members will follow in Holy Cross Roman Catholic Cemetery, Old Forge.
In keeping with Matthew’s wishes, the viewing will be private for the immediate family members.
In accordance with Federal, State, and Diocesan guidelines, those attending the funeral Mass are required to wear a facial covering and observe social distancing.
