MaryAnn R. Barilla, 87, a longtime resident of Slocum Street, Swoyersville, passed quietly into eternal life on Monday morning, May 26, 2025, at Highland Park Senior Living, Wilkes-Barre Township, where she recently resided.
Her beloved husband of 64 years was the late Magisterial District Judge Andrew Barilla Jr., who passed away on July 23, 2020.
Born on May 27, 1937, in Plains, MaryAnn was one of two children born to the late Edward Charnetski and Anna Kamus Charnetski Urbanovich.
Raised in Swoyersville, MaryAnn was a graduate of the former Swoyersville High School, Class of 1955. Later, she went on to receive her certification to be a Magisterial District Judge from Wilson College, Chambersburg.
As a young woman, MaryAnn worked as a switchboard operator for the Bell Telephone Company, Wilkes Barre, eventually leaving work to raise her five children. After her children were raised, she returned to the workforce as a secretary for the Magisterial District Courts of Luzerne County retiring from there.
Maryann was a devout Catholic and a member of Holy Family Parish, Luzerne.
Always actively involved in each of her children’s activities, MaryAnn most notably served as a Girl Scout Leader while her daughters were Girl Scouts.
Sharing a love for the Penn State Nittany Lions with her family, MaryAnn was a member of the Penn State Club of the Wyoming Valley, enjoying countless home and away games, and the magnificent tailgates.
MaryAnn reveled in the simple pleasures of life, such as family vacations to the Jersey Shore, Hilton Head, South Carolina, and Florida; taking meticulous care of her home and surrounding property; and curling up with a good book or magazine.
Gentle natured with a calm and quiet aura, MaryAnn was unwavering when it came to the love and support she showered upon her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren – they were truly the greatest blessings in her life. The beautiful legacy she leaves behind will forever be treasured by her loved ones.
In addition to her parents, Edward Charnetski and Anna Charnetski Urbanovich, and her husband, Andrew, Maryann was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Lisa Barilla, who passed away on March 26, 1972.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Susan Barilla-Davis (William); Magisterial District Judge David Barilla (Suzanne); Anita Waravdekar (Neil MD); and Andrew Barilla IV (Kayanne); her grandchildren, Jonathan Davis (Chrissy); Jennifer Parulis (Doug); Drew Waravdekar (Renee); Rebecca Altner (Zach Esq); Cristina Waravdekar; Nicolas Waravdekar; Alexander Barilla (Ari); Kathryn Barilla; and Margaret Barilla; her step grandson, William Davis Jr. (Kim); her great-grandchildren, Brayden, Keegan, and Shea Davis; Ella Ann and Madeleine Parulis; Charlotte and James Waravdekar; and Amelia Altner; her step great-grandchildren, Gavin and Parker Davis; her brother, Anthony Charnetski (Sandy); her sister-in-law, Maryann Yurko (Richard); her brother-in-law, John Barilla (Jeanne); as well as her nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the entire staff at Highland Park Senior Living, especially those in the Bridges Memory Care Unit, for their outstanding care of MaryAnn while she resided there. They also wish to extend their sincerest gratitude to the staff of Hospice of the Sacred Heart for ensuring MaryAnn’s final days were filled with peace and comfort.
The family invites all of MaryAnn’s family and friends to attend her viewing at the Wroblewski Funeral Home, Inc., 1442 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort. The first day of viewing will be held on Sunday, June 8, 2025, from 2:00 to 6:00 PM. The second day of viewing will be held on Monday, June 9, 2025, from 3:00 to 7:00 PM.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend MaryAnn’s Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at 10:00 AM in Holy Family Parish, 574 Bennett Street, Luzerne. The Reverend Father Joseph J. Pisaneschi, dear friend of the Barilla family, will be the Celebrant. Those attending the funeral Mass are asked to go directly to the church on Tuesday morning.
The burial will be private.
