Mary Costello, 97, previously a resident of Milford and Philadelphia, and currently a resident of Meadows Manor, Dallas, passed away peacefully on Friday evening, June 22, 2018, at the Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Dallas.

Born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Mary was the daughter of the late Clarence Edgar Knauer and Edna (Rogers) Knauer.

Mary was a graduate of the Episcopal Hospital School of Nursing, Philadelphia.  

After several years of being a hospital nurse, Mary went on to serve as a nurse and office manager for Dr. Dugger and Dr. Bland, in Philadelphia. Prior to her retirement in 1990, Mary was employed as the public health nurse for Pike County, a position she held since 1972.In her professional career, Mary was noted for her compassion, efficiency, and effectiveness.

Mary was an active volunteer in the Milford community and was known by many residents through her work with children.

In September of 1944, Mary married Andrew J. “Bud” Costello, of Philadelphia. Together, Mary, Bud, and their only son, Andrew, enjoyed the outdoors, most especially, fishing, camping, hiking, archery, traveling north to Maine and Canada, traveling south to the Smoky Mountains, and visiting the many state parks throughout Pennsylvania.

Mary and her husband, Bud, built a vacation home in the Poconos in the 1960’s, making it their permanent residence in 1972.

A skilled crafter, Mary enjoyed making ceramics, quilting, knitting, and creating many Christmas items for her family. After retiring, she did some international traveling, and spent hours reading; walking the trails near her home; baking for her family, friends and neighbors; and spoiling her grandchildren! The love and care Mary had for her family and friends was notable in her community and she will be sorely missed by the many who loved her.

In addition to her parents, Clarence and Edna Knauer, Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Andrew, in 1984; and her siblings, Daniel Knauer and Edna Kneisler.

Mary is survived by her son, Dr. Andrew J. Costello Jr., and his wife, Marsha, Forty Fort; her grandsons, Dr. Michael J. Costello and his partner, Danica Fisher, Ithaca, New York; and Patrick A. Costello Esq. and his wife, Amy, Wilmington, Delaware; her three great-grandchildren, Eva, Spencer and Theo Costello; her sister, Jane Deluca, Haverford, Pennsylvania; and her two nephews, Daniel and Nicholas Deluca.

Relatives and Friends are respectfully invited to attend Mary’s viewing which will be held on Monday, June 25, 2018, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, at the Wroblewski Funeral Home, Inc., 1442 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort. A Celebration of her life will be held at 7:00 PM on Monday evening.

A Burial Service will be held on Tuesday, June 26, 2018, at 11:00 AM, at Mary’s gravesite in Milford Cemetery, Milford, Pennsylvania.
