Mary Ellen Adams, 84, formerly of 80 James Street, Kingston, passed away on Thursday afternoon, February 06, 2025, in the comfort of her residence in Brooks Estates, Jenkins Township.
Born on August 19, 1940, in Wilkes-Barre, Ellen was the daughter of the late Aloysius Crane Sr. and Margaret Hayden Crane.
Ellen was part of the first graduating class from Central Catholic High School, Kingston. Following high school, she graduated from Misericordia College, now Misericordia University, Dallas. She was always very proud of her alma mater’s and remained involved in reunions and alumni events into her 80’s. She also developed very special lifelong friendships with many of her classmates.
After graduating from college, Ellen married Bob Adams, the love of her life, and remained in Kingston, welcoming two sons, Robert Jr. and Timothy. Following a brief stint as a teacher and coach at Kingston High School, Bob entered on duty as a Special Agent with the FBI in 1967 and was assigned initially to Birmingham, Alabama. They were later transferred to the FBI office in Gary, Indiana, and relocated to Portage, Indiana. During that assignment Bob and Ellen welcomed their daughter, Lynn, the only Hoosier in the family. Bob and Ellen were very involved in their community and the local Catholic Church in Portage. They maintained very close long-lasting relationships with their friends from that time.
The pull of home never left them and Bob was transferred to the FBI’s office in Wilkes-Barre in 1977. They settled back in their hometown of Kingston and lived there for over 45 years. Ellen’s main focus in life was her Catholic faith, family, and friends. Ellen always put her family first and was a stay-at-home mom dedicated to the welfare of her children. She later worked for the Child Development Council and Jostens, Inc. for many years.
Ellen loved her husband, children, their spouses, and her grandchildren deeply and always put them first. She was completely dedicated to their happiness. “Nana” loved nothing more than spending time with her family, attending their Baptisms, Communions, Confirmations, Graduations, sporting events, and summer vacations. She especially loved to win at the casino or from a lottery scratch-off so she could send the winnings to her grandchildren. Once she knew a family member had a favorite pizza, pretzel, snack, or beverage, you could count on it being part of the next visit with her.
She and Bob also made sure the family stayed connected and the grandchildren remained close by arranging summer vacations at the Outer Banks or Jersey Shore. A big part of Ellen and Bob’s legacy is the closeness of the family and how the grandchildren know each other so well despite geographic distance, as well as the focus on the important things in life. Bob and Ellen also recently celebrated 60 years of marriage.
Ellen was also a humble servant to others outside of her family. She volunteered for many years at Meals on Wheels, and as needed at church for funerals at her beloved Saint Ignatius Loyola Church, Kingston.
Ellen had an incredible ability to put others first without them knowing it so that faith, family, and friendship were always emphasized. She was selfless and was always happy to be in the background as long as others were happy.
In addition to her parents, Aloysius and Margaret Crane, Ellen was preceded in death by her only brother, Aloysius Crane Jr.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Bob; and their three children, Lynn Bittner (AJ), Dallas; Robert Adams Jr. (Nancy), Purcellville, Virginia; and Timothy Adams (Daneen), St. Augustine, Florida; grandchildren, Timothy, Jay, Robby, Matthew, Sydney, Ryan, Brynn, and Katy; as well as several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to Ellen’s caregivers, who were honestly angels on earth, as they cared for her every day over the last few years. To the angels from Hospice of the Sacred Heart, thank you for giving her so much comfort during her last days.
