Lawrence B. Kalac, 87, born at home on Union Street, Pringle, PA and a lifelong resident, died peacefully Tuesday, February 16, 2021, after a brief illness at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Lawrence was one of five children born to the late George and Mary Chukinas Kalac, Pringle PA. He graduated from St. Nicholas School, Wilkes-Barre, PA in 1951 and attended Penn State for drafting.
His career as a machine designer began at General Cigar Co., Kingston, evolved through Midway Tool Inc., Pittston, before he co-founded and successfully ran Daltech Inc., a machine design and building shop, Hanover, PA for 15 years, retiring in 1999. The Kalac family and a great variety of friends benefited immensely from Lawrence’s 22 creative years of retirement at his woodworking shop at home. “Show anyone a wood table and watch their hand reach out to caress it,” Lawrence said.
A lifelong member of Sacred Heart Parish (Holy Family Parish) Luzerne, PA, he was a talented golfer at Fox Hill Country Club and skilled fly fisherman for 40 years. Lawrence was very proud of his Croatian heritage.
Surviving Lawrence are his beloved wife, Leona Krieger Kalac, of 62 years; daughters, Jolayne (Duane) Pinchak, Lewisburg PA; Michelle (Thomas) Pilch, Shavertown PA; sons, Michael (Suzanne) Kalac, Highlands Ranch CO; and Paul (Elizabeth) Kalac, Gloversville NY; a sister, Vivian Fiascki, Camarillo CA; and brother Peter, Neptune NJ.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas; and sister Berthildis Morton.
Lawrence adored his grandchildren, Scott Pinchak and his wife Beth, Eric Pinchak; Nicholas, Benjamin, Julia, and Rachel Pilch; Alyssa, Evan, and Anna Kalac; Joy Kalac; and his great grandchildren, Jack, Charles and James Lawrence, sons of Scott and Beth.
A private Mass of Christian Burial will be at the family’s convenience. The family is planning a celebration of life at a later date.
