Joseph J. Shampack, 82, a resident of Harding and formerly of Swoyersville, passed into eternal life on Friday morning, July 01, 2022, at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
He was reunited in heaven with his beloved wife of 49 years, Barbara Ann Pace Shampack, who passed away on August 24, 2014.
Born on October 20, 1939, in Swoyersville, Joseph was one of seven children born to the late Michael and Veronica (Foris) Shampack.
Raised in Swoyersville, Joseph was a graduate of the former Swoyersville High School, Class of 1957, where he was a member of the Swoyersville Sailors Baseball Team.
A United States Navy Veteran, Joseph honorably served his country as a Seaman for nearly 3 years during peacetime.
Prior to his retirement, Joseph was employed as a motor coach driver for Capitol Trailways, formerly of Wilkes-Barre.
Baseball was a passion of Joseph’s from an early age, playing baseball into adulthood at Roosevelt Field in Swoyersville. In his earlier years, he helped with the maintenance of Roosevelt Field, most notably helping with the construction of the original dugouts. A lifelong fan of the New York Yankees, he also enjoyed football and was a great fan of the New Orleans Saints. He also enjoyed fishing, especially at his favorite vacation spot, Black Lake in Upstate New York.
Above all, Joseph’s greatest love in life was his family, and he cherished every moment he shared with his loved ones, most especially his grandchildren who were the light of his life! When it came to his grandchildren, he was their biggest cheerleader, never missing any of their functions or sporting events. The love and devotion he had for his family will be his lasting legacy.
In addition to his parents, Michael and Veronica, and his wife, Barbara, Joseph was preceded in death by his sisters, Lois Koval and Ellen Wolfram.
Joseph is survived by his loving daughters, Donna Shampack, Swoyersville; and Michele DeNardi and her husband, Elio, Harding; his five adoring grandchildren, Juliana DeNardi, David Casterline Jr., Michael DeNardi, Antonio DeNardi, and Tyler Casterline; his brother, Michael Shampack, Swoyersville; his sisters, Faith Yurgatis, Caldwell, New Jersey; Barbara Hanusin, Crestwood, Kentucky; and Rita Tibus, Swoyersville; as well as his many nieces and nephews.
