John Nixon Shoemaker, 91, a resident of Wyoming, passed away peacefully late Sunday evening, August 05, 2018. John never had a bad day in his life, and he attributed his longevity to diet, rest, and mild exercise.
Born on January 30, 1927, in Wilkes-Barre, John was the son of the late Thomas T.W. Shoemaker and Eleanor (Nixon) Shoemaker.
John was a graduate of the former West Pittston High School, Class of 1944. After high school, John went on to honorably serve for two years in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Upon his discharge from the service, he enrolled in Wilkes College, now Wilkes University, where in 1950 he acquired his Bachelor’s Degree.
Prior to his retirement, John was the proprietor of Shoemaker Card and Gift Shops, as well as Shoemaker Hardware.
John was a member of the Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce; served on the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Wyoming; a member of the Westmoreland Club since 1971; held membership with the Wyoming Business Club from 1952 until 2014; and was a past member of Fox Hill Country Club.
A man of many enjoyments, John especially enjoyed entertaining; having his gin martini’s extra dry with 2 olives; sitting in front of his fire place; going on jazz cruises; visiting New York City; having his breakfast every morning; playing Mahjong; being a proud Republican; and reunions with his classmates. Above all, John was happiest being surrounded by those he loved most – his beloved family!
In addition to his parents, Thomas and Eleanor Shoemaker, John was preceded in death by his first wife, Antoinette “Toni” (Menegus) Shoemaker; his sister, Martha Terry; his brother, Thomas “Doc” Shoemaker; and his mother-in-law, Olga Cajka.
John is survived by his second wife, Natalie (Cajka) Shoemaker, with whom he celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary on July 15th; his children, Jack (Michelle) Shoemaker; Jim (Susan) Shoemaker; Joshua Shoemaker; Darryl Stahler; Jeanne Taylor; and Holly (Tom) Lanza; his grandchildren, Molly, Maggie, Liz, Jacob, Isabel, Amanda, Christopher, Dominick, Samantha, Carissa, Miranda, and Sierra; his great-grandchildren, Marnie and Isla; as well as his many nieces and nephews.
