John Lawrence Matukonis, 94, a resident of Forty Fort, passed into eternal life early Tuesday morning, May 16, 2017, at ManorCare Health and Rehabilitation Center, Kingston, where he was a guest for the past few weeks.
His loving wife is Alice L. (Gavlick) Matukonis, with whom he celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on May 14th.
Born on October 14, 1922, in Luzerne, John was one of seven children born to the late Peter and Anna (Bingeliute) Matukonis.
Raised in Luzerne, John attended the former Luzerne High School.
A United States Navy Veteran, John honorably served his country as a Seaman 1st Class during World War II.
Prior to his retirement, John was employed by General Roofing, Wilkes-Barre, as a sheet metal worker. He was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union, Local 44, Wilkes-Barre.
John was a past member of the former Saint Mary of Czestochowa Church, Swoyersville. Following the consolidation of his church, he became a member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Swoyersville.
In addition to his parents, Peter and Anna Matukonis, John was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph, Frank, and Anthony Matukonis; and his sisters, Ann Matukonis, Mary Kachmar, and Josephine Makausky.
In addition to his wife, Alice, John is survived by his three sons, Edward Matukonis, Forty Fort; Michael Matukonis and his wife, Merry, Centre Hall; and Richard Matukonis, and his wife, Ann Rice, Williamsport; his grandchildren, Tess Fellows, Will Matukonis, and Natalie Gephart; his one great-grandson; as well as generations of nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral which will be conducted on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at 8:30 AM from the Wroblewski Funeral Home, Inc., 1442 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:00 AM in Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, 116 Hughes Street, Swoyersville, with the Reverend Joseph J. Pisaneschi, his Pastor, officiating.
Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Swoyersville.
