John J. Delescavage Sr., a resident of Swoyersville, passed into eternal life on the evening of his 92nd birthday, Thursday, June 01, 2017, at Timber Ridge Health Care Center, Wilkes-Barre, where he was recently a guest.
His beloved wife was the late Irene S. (Raiewski) Delescavage, who passed away on July 10, 2013. Together, John and Irene shared nearly 66 years of marriage.
Born on June 01, 1925, in Wilkes-Barre, John was the son of the late Stanley and Catherine (Lukasavage) Delescavage.
A United States Navy veteran, John honorably served his country for 2 ½ years during World War II. During his time of service, he was stationed aboard the USS Thomas F. Nickel, and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, the Philippine Campaign Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. Upon his honorable discharge on April 15, 1946, he attained the rank of Seaman 1st Class.
Prior to his retirement, John was employed as a Journeyman Lineman for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1319, Wilkes-Barre. In his earlier years, he was employed as a miner in the local coal mining industry.
For many years, John was a softball umpire with the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA).
John was a longtime member of the former Holy Name/Saint Mary’s Parish Community, Swoyersville, where he held membership with the parish’s Holy Name Society. Following the consolidation of his parish, he became a member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Swoyersville.
A proud veteran, John held membership with the American Legion, Andrew Lawrence Post 644, Swoyersville and the Catholic War Veterans, Memorial Post 1601, Swoyersville.
In addition to his parents, Stanley and Catherine Delescavage, and his wife, Irene, John was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Delescavage; and his sisters, Betty Martin, Irene Farris, Stella Falchek, and Margaret Young.
John is survived by his son, John J. Delescavage Jr. and his wife, Mary Croft, Harrisburg; his granddaughter, Samantha; his brother, Stanley (Delescavage) Dell, Bridgeton, New Jersey; as well as his many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral which will be conducted on Tuesday, June 06, 2017, at 9:30 AM from the Wroblewski Funeral Home, Inc., 1442 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 AM in Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, 116 Hughes Street, Swoyersville, with the Reverend Joseph J. Pisaneschi, his Pastor, officiating.
Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Swoyersville, where Military Honors will be accorded by the United States Navy.
