John G. Hemenetz, 90, a resident of the Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre, fell asleep in the Lord early Tuesday morning, February 22, 2022, at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township.
Born on December 05, 1931, in Plains Township, John was one of eight children born to the late Michael and Sophie (Onisko) Hemenetz. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Raised in the North End section of Wilkes-Barre, John was a graduate of the former James M. Coughlin High School, Class of 1949.
A United States Army veteran, John honorably served his country for three and a half years during the Korean War, serving two of those years in the Philippines. Upon his honorable discharge on December 15, 1952, he attained the rank of Private 1st Class.
Following his military service, John went on to attend Kings College, Wilkes-Barre, where, in 1959, he attained his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration.
Prior to his retirement, John was employed for 25 years by the Pennsylvania Department of Welfare. During his retirement years, he was employed for some time by the East Mountain Inn, now known as the Holiday Inn, Wilkes-Barre.
A man of strong faith and hope in the Lord, John was a kind and generous person who lived to serve others. He was a member of Saint Nicholas of Myra Byzantine Catholic Church, Swoyersville, and prior to his membership there, he was a lifelong member of Holy Assumption of Saint Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, North Wilkes-Barre, where he was actively involved with many of the church’s functions.
John enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, such as reading one of his numerous books. Above all, his greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with his loved ones. He will be remembered as a devoted son to his parents, a dedicated brother to his siblings, and a wonderful uncle to his nieces and nephews. May his memory be eternal!
In addition to his parents, Michael and Sophie Hemenetz, John was preceded in death by his brothers, Michael Hemence, George Hemenetz, and infant Charles Hemenetz; and his sisters, Mary Hemenetz, Ann Matcho, Julia Burko, and Helen Salzman.
John is survived by generations of nieces and nephews.
Relatives and Friends are respectfully invited to attend John’s Office of Christian Burial with Divine Liturgy which will be celebrated on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at 10:00 AM in Saint Nicholas of Myra Byzantine Catholic Church, 271 Tripp Street, Swoyersville, with the Reverend Andrii Dumnych, his Pastor, officiating. The family would greatly appreciate if those attending the Divine Liturgy wear a mask.
Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in the Saint Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Cemetery, Dallas, where Military Honors will be accorded by the United States Army.
In keeping with John’s wishes, there will be no public viewing.
