John E. Masterson, 93, a resident of Swoyersville, passed away on Saturday morning, March 25, 2017, at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
The love of his life is the late Julia “Judy” (Dombek) Masterson. John and Judy were married on October 07, 1944 at the U.S. Naval Base in Portsmouth, Virginia, and together they shared nearly 63 wonderful years of marriage until her passing on July 04, 2007.
Born on September 09, 1923, in Pittsburgh, John was one of five children born to the late Leo and Clara (Hauser) Masterson.
Raised in Bellevue, Pennsylvania, John was employed by Mellon National Bank, Pittsburgh, prior to his service during World War II.
A United States Navy veteran, John honorably served his country for nearly 3 years during World War II as a Pharmacists Mate 1st Class. During his time of service, he was stationed in the Pacific Theatre and witnessed firsthand the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay, as well as the destruction of Hiroshima.
In 1946, John moved to his wife’s hometown of Wilkes-Barre. He soon gained employment with the L & L Supply Company, Wilkes-Barre, working there for 40 years as an estimator/bidder for plumbing and heating projects.
John enjoyed keeping abreast of current and political events, and he was a loyal fan of Notre Dame and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Since childhood, John excelled in art and he was a very accomplished watercolor artist throughout his life.
A kind, gentle, loving man, and great father, John brought a laugh and a smile to many with his unique and unusual sense of humor. He will truly be missed by all those who had the distinct privilege of knowing him. “We will miss you Pop-Pop”.
The Family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Riverstreet Manor, Wilkes-Barre, as well as the doctors and nurses from the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital and Erwine Home Health and Hospice, for the outstanding care they bestowed upon John during his time of need.
In addition to his parents, Leo and Clara Masterson, and his wife, Julia “Judy” Masterson, John was preceded in death by his brother, Leo Masterson; and his sisters, Betty Clark and Ruth Evans.
John is survived by his three children, Robert Masterson, Virginia; Richard Masterson and his wife, Deborah, South Carolina; and Diane Bestider, Swoyersville; his three grandchildren, Michael, Kevin and Rachael Masterson; his twin sister, Jane McKenzie, California; as well as his many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and Friends are respectfully invited to attend John’s funeral service which will be celebrated on Thursday, March 30, 2017, at 7:30 PM, at the Wroblewski Funeral Home, Inc., 1442 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort.
Family and Friends may call on Thursday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 PM, at the funeral home.
Entombment will be privately held on Friday morning at the Denison Cemetery Mausoleum, Swoyersville, where John will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife.
