Johanna Gula Sorber, 95, a resident of Swoyersville, passed into eternal life, surrounded by her loving family, on Wednesday afternoon, January 22, 2025, at Allied Services Hospice Center, Wilkes-Barre, following a brief illness.
Her first husband of 45 years was the late Joseph T. “Scoop” Gula, who passed away on August 05, 1996. Her second husband of 15 years was the late Harry D. Sorber, who passed away on June 23, 2013.
Born on August 19, 1929, in West Wyoming, Johanna was one of three children born to the late Joseph Yarina and Mary Charney Yarina.
Johanna was a graduate of Chester High School, Chester, Pennsylvania, Class of 1947. She then went on to attend beauty school, receiving her cosmetology certification.
Prior to her retirement, Johanna was employed as a sewing machine operator for various garment factories throughout the Wyoming Valley, holding membership with the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. In her earlier years, she practiced as a beautician.
Johanna was a longtime member of Holy Trinity Church, Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Swoyersville, where she was a past member of its Holy Name Society. Strong in her faith, she prayed the rosary daily. Additionally, at one time she was a very active member of the Maltby Fire Company’s Ladies Auxiliary, Swoyersville.
An excellent cook and baker, Johanna enjoyed nothing more than having her family together. She will forever be remembered as a loving and devoted mother, and nana to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Joseph and Mary Yarina; her first husband, Joseph Gula; and her second husband, Harry Sorber, Johanna was preceded in death by her brother, John Yarina; and her sister, Rose Marie Rosencrans.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, Ronald Gula, Swoyersville; her daughter, Marianne Maticic and her husband, John, Kingman, Arizona; her grandchildren, Christopher Gula and his wife, Stacie; Stacey Hooper and her husband, Robert; Eric Gula and his wife, Michelle; Benjamin Maticic; and Brian Maticic; her great-grandchildren, Brianna, Rebecca, and Joseph Gula; Nicholas Hooper; Kaden, Nikoli, Brennon, Aurora and Link Maticic; her step-son, David Sorber and his wife, Reva, Arizona; her step-grandchildren; as well as generations of nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a memorial visitation on Thursday, February 06, 2025, from 9:30 to 10:30 AM in Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, 116 Hughes Street, Swoyersville, where a Memorial Mass will commence at 10:30 AM. The Reverend Father John J. Chmil, her Pastor, will officiate.
Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Cemetery, Swoyersville.
Johanna’s family entrusted her funeral arrangements to the care of the Wroblewski Funeral Home, Inc., 1442 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort.
