Joanne M. Smith, 70, a resident of Larksville, and formerly of Laurel Run, passed into eternal life on Friday afternoon, January 11, 2019, at her home, surrounded by her loving family and friends.
Her beloved husband was the late Jack Marie Smith, who passed away on April 22, 2018. Together, Jack and “his Bride”, Joanne, shared 48 beautiful years of marriage.
Born on August 14, 1948, in Wilkes-Barre, Joanne was one of five children born to the late Stanley and Mary (Bozak) Urban.
Raised in the Heights section of Wilkes-Barre, Joanne was a graduate of GAR Memorial High School, Class of 1966.
Joanne worked in various capacities throughout her life, but she was happiest being a homemaker to her adoring husband and children. She epitomized the roles of wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
A faithful Catholic with an unfaltering devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Joanne was a member of Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Parish, Wilkes-Barre.
Joanne lived a humble, prayerful life, which was full of love and compassion toward every person she encountered along her journey. Her door was open to family, friends, and strangers alike, and that open door always resulted in sharing a home cooked meal, a fresh cup of coffee, and an uplifting conversation.
In addition to her parents, Stanley and Mary Urban, and her husband, Jack, Joanne was preceded in death by her two year old son, Bobby Smith; her infant daughter, Sarah Smith; her brother, Robert Urban; and her sister, Dorothy Urban Jones.
Joanne is survived by her children, Joanne Marie Castillo, Wyoming; Shannon Ray Smith, Wilkes-Barre; and Mary Margaret Smith, Larksville; her 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; her brother, Stanley Urban, Tennessee; her sister, Mary Ann Hurst, Wilkes-Barre; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; as well as generations of nieces and nephews.
Relatives and Friends are respectfully invited to attend Joanne’s Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated on Tuesday, January 15, 2019, at 10:30 AM in Our Lady of Hope of Parish, 40 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, with the Reverend John S. Terry, her Pastor, officiating.
Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Hanover Township.
