Jeanne M. Purcell, 87, a resident of Dallas, passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, June 08, 2017, at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore, following a brief illness.
Her beloved husband was the late Joseph W. Purcell, who passed away on June 12, 1993. Together, Joseph and Jeanne shared 34 years of marriage.
Born on August 05, 1929, in Wilkes-Barre, Jeanne was one of three children born to the late Michael E. Tully and Ruth N. (Layaou) Tully.
Raised in Wilkes-Barre, Jeanne was a graduate of the former Saint Mary’s High School, Class of 1948. Following high school, she went on to further her education at College Misericordia, now Misericordia University, where in 1952, she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Music and Latin. Later, she went on to receive her Master’s Degree in Music from College Misericordia.
Prior to her retirement, Jeanne taught both elementary music and secondary English for the Lake Lehman School District. For many years, she also gave private piano lessons in the homes of her students.
Jeanne was a member of Saint Therese Roman Catholic Church, Shavertown. She also held membership with the Alumni Board at Misericordia University, the Luzerne County Retired Teachers Association, the Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA), the Back Mountain Bloomers Garden Club, and the Red Hat Society.
Throughout her life, Jeanne was blessed to travel extensively, and she had a passion for reading just about anything.
In addition to her parents, Michael and Ruth Tully, and her husband, Joseph, Jeanne was preceded in death most recently by her granddaughter, Airman 1st Class Shannon M. Purcell U.S.A.F., who passed away on May 06, 2017; and also by her sister, Ruth Swift.
Jeanne is survived by her three children, Christopher Purcell, Dallas; Mary Allen and her husband, Mark, Bear Creek Twp.; and Dave Purcell, Swoyersville; her two granddaughters, Melissa McHugh and her husband, Liam; and Rikki Purcell; her great-grandson, Finnegan McHugh; her brother, John Tully, Middletown, New Jersey; as well as generations of nieces and nephews.
Relatives and Friends are respectfully invited to attend a Memorial Mass which will be celebrated on Monday, June 26, 2017, at 11:00 AM in Saint Therese Church, 64 Davis Street, Shavertown, with the Reverend James J. Paisley, her Pastor, officiating.
Private interment will be held in Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Hanover Township.
There will be no public calling hours.
Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Wroblewski Funeral Home, Inc., 1442 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort.
