After a long, full, and happy life, Helen Opsitos, age 101, a lifelong resident of Edwardsville, fell asleep in the Lord on Sunday evening, June 20, 2021, at Residential Hospice, Inpatient Unit, at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre, following a brief illness.
Her beloved husband was the late Joseph Opsitos, who passed away on September 01, 2000. Together, Joseph and Helen shared 56 beautiful years of marriage.
Born on March 08, 1920, in Edwardsville, Helen the youngest of nine children born to the late Havrill “Harry” Drugotch and Mary (Romanak) Drugotch.
Helen was a graduate of the former Edwardsville High School, Class of 1937.
A homemaker most of her life, Helen devoted her life to tending to the daily needs of her husband and children.
Helen was a faithful Catholic who had a great devotion to the Blessed Mother, praying the Rosary several times a day. She was a lifelong member of Saint Mary’s Pokrova Byzantine Catholic Church, Kingston, where she had the distinction of being its oldest living member, and held membership with its Altar and Rosary Society.
Helen was a longtime member of the Ladies of the Assumpta of the Knights of Columbus, Assumpta Council 3987, formerly of Luzerne. She was also a member of the Pittston Senior Citizens, where she met her loving companion, George Haydu, at a Valentine’s Day dance, remaining each other’s valentine for the past 13 years.
A woman of many enjoyments, Helen enjoyed cooking for her family; keeping her home meticulous; and dancing. She had a great love for traveling and was blessed to go on countless cruises as well as visiting Portugal, Brazil, and Spain with her husband. She also loved going on family vacations to the Dominican Republic and Mexico with her children and grandchildren.
Above all, Helen’s greatest love in life was for her family. She will be remembered by her family for her boundless love and devotion, and although her beautiful presence will be deeply missed, her spirit will live on in the hearts of her loved ones for generations to come.
In addition to her parents, Havrill and Mary Drugotch, and her husband Joseph, Helen was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Susan Opsitos, who died shortly after birth; her son-in-law, Frank Curcio, who passed away on February 15, 2021; her grandson, Justin Curcio, who passed away on October 22, 2016; her brothers, Joseph, George, and Michael Drugotch; her infant brother, John Drugotch; her sisters, Mary Gawlick, Anna Stemmer, Margaret Barilla, and Kathryn Kravitsky.
Helen is survived by her three children, Elaine Curcio, Larksville; Joseph Opsitos and his companion, Kimberly Todd, Swoyersville; and Donna Marie Sigmond, Swoyersville; her grandchildren, Stephen Opsitos; Alison Hoover and her husband, Michael; Erick Sigmond and his wife, Chelsea; Brandon Curcio and his fiancée, Rebecca Shovlin; Rachael Sigmond; and Ethan Sigmond; her great-grandchildren, David Hoover, Sophie Hoover, Milo Sigmond, and Isla Curcio; her loving companion, George Haydu, Forty Fort; as well as generations of nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend their sincerest and heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff from the 4th floor trauma unit at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, as well as the nurses from Residential Hospice for the compassionate and tender care they bestowed upon Helen during her final days.
Relatives and Friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral which will be conducted on Saturday, June 26, 2021, at 8:30 AM from the Wroblewski Funeral Home, Inc., 1442 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort, followed by an Office of Christian Burial with Divine Liturgy at 9:00 AM in Saint Mary’s Pokrova Byzantine Catholic Church, 321 Chestnut Avenue, Kingston, with the Reverend Mykhaylo Prodanets, her Pastor, officiating.
Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in the Denison Cemetery, Swoyersville.
Family and Friends are invited to attend Helen’s viewing which will be held on Friday, June 25, 2021, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, at the funeral home.
