Helen E. Yurish, 97, a resident of Hudson, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Wednesday evening, July 29, 2015, at Celtic Healthcare Hospice, Inpatient Unit at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre.
Her beloved husband was the late Stephen J. Yurish, who passed away on November 08, 1995. Stephen and Helen were blessed to share 56 wonderful years of marriage.
Born on January 27, 1918, in Hudson, Helen was one of eight children born to the late Sylvester and Mary (Dzwoniarek) Piotrowski.
Raised in Hudson, Helen was a graduate of the former Plains Memorial High School, Plains Township.
As a young woman, Helen was employed as a supervisor for the former Hessler Laundry, which was located on North Main Street, Wilkes-Barre.
Later, Helen attended Empire Beauty School, Wilkes-Barre, where she received her cosmetology certification. For 50 years, she operated a beauty parlor out of her home, retiring at the age of 87. Helen was dedicated to her customers, and would even occasionally work on Sunday’s if her customers were attending special events.
Additionally, Helen served as secretary for 38 years for her family’s former business, Yurish Music Center, Inc., Kingston.
A faithful Catholic, Helen had a strong devotion to the Blessed Mother. She was a longtime member of Saint Maria Goretti Roman Catholic Parish, Laflin, and once belonged to the parish’s “Young at Heart” club.
Helen enjoyed many things in life, especially going to casinos and traveling to the Bahamas. Above all, her greatest enjoyment in life was being surrounded by her loved ones.
A devoted mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother, she freely and lovingly gave of herself, never asking for anything in return. Although her presence will be greatly missed, there is much joy in knowing she is reunited with her beloved Stephen and all those who have gone before her.
In addition to her parents, Sylvester and Mary Piotrowski, and her husband, Stephen, Helen was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph and Frank Piotrowski; and her sisters, Frances Goobic, Joanne Stefanowski, Martha Mrozinski, Stella Okrasinski, and Mary Graham.
Helen is survived by her son, Richard S. Yurish and his wife, Eileen, Hudson; her granddaughter, Brenda Gomb and her husband, Scott; and generations of nieces and nephews.
