Hedwig R. “Hedy” Phillips, age 99, a resident of Edwardsville, passed quietly into eternal life on Thursday morning, January 04, 2024, at the Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Dallas, where she was a guest since May of 2023. She welcomed New Year’s Day and was proud to greet the year in which she would turn 100!
She and her daughter, Krista, have a very special bond that not even death can break. They shared many trials during the past three years of Hedy’s illnesses, and she always told Krista, “It’s you and me against the world.”
Born on August 18, 1924, in Kingston, Hedy was one of eight children born to the late Charles Tyckowski and Mary Ann Zolnierowicz Tyckowski.
Raised in Kingston, Hedy was a graduate of the former Kingston High School, Class of 1942.
Her beloved husband was the late Peter H. Phillips who passed away on February 01, 2009. Peter and Hedy were blessed to share 62 years of marriage.
Prior to her retirement at age 73, Hedy was employed for many years as a secretary for Maternal & Family Health Services, Wilkes-Barre.
Devoted to her Catholic faith, Hedy was a member of the former Saint Hedwig’s Church, Kingston, and following the closing of her church, she became a member of Saint Ignatius Loyola Church, Kingston.
Young at heart, despite being 99, Hedy had a very sharp mind until her final day – always keeping up with current events. An avid reader, she read a new book every two days and could describe in detail every character and every location in the book, and how she thought the story should have ended. She learned to use a Kindle Reader at age 97 and was the family’s “go-to” if they needed an answer to a word puzzle.
Hedy’s favorite place was the front porch of her home, where her number-one activity was sitting on her rocker, waiting for her daughter or grandchildren to visit and share a bowl of ice cream. She also loved cooking; especially during the Christmas season, preparing the Polish Wiglia dinner and in the summer, canning the abundant harvest of her husband’s homegrown tomatoes.
The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the nursing staff at the Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the compassionate care they bestowed upon Hedy, as well as the nurses from Hospice of the Sacred Heart for all they did to ensure her passing was peaceful.
In addition to her parents, Charles and Mary Ann Tyckowski, and her husband, Peter, Hedy was preceded in death by her brothers, Charles and Joseph Tyckowski; and her sisters, Helen Polomski, Stella McNey, Teresa Yatsko, Marcella Smith, and Regina Tyckowski.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Krista Phillips Connolly, Swoyersville; her two grandchildren, John Peter “J.P.” Connolly, Shamokin; and Sarah Connolly, Swoyersville; her niece, Amy Stratton and her husband, Leon, and their son, Logan; her nephew, Bill Yatsko and his wife, Sandi; as well as several other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral which will be conducted on Monday, January 15, 2024, at 9:45 AM from the Wroblewski Funeral Home, Inc., 1442 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:15 AM in Saint Ignatius Loyola Church, 339 North Maple Avenue, Kingston, with Monsignor David L. Tressler, her Pastor, officiating.
Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in Saint Ignatius Roman Catholic Cemetery, Pringle.
