George Haydu, 98, a resident of Forty Fort, entered into eternal rest in the early hours of New Year’s Day, Saturday, January 01, 2022, at his residence.
His beloved wife was the late Cecilia (Toloczko) Haydu, who passed away on October 23, 1993. Together, George and Cecilia shared 46 beautiful years of marriage.
Born on August 17, 1923, in the Hudson section of Plains Township, George was one of seven children born to the late George and Mary (Wasickanin) Haydu.
In his early years, he resided in Wilkes-Barre, and was a graduate of the former James M. Coughlin High School, Class of 1941.
A United States Army veteran, George honorably served his country during World War II in the South Pacific Theatre. He was decorated with the Army Occupation Medal (Japan), the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. Upon his honorable discharge on November 11, 1946, he attained the rank of Technician 4th Grade.
Prior to his retirement in 1992, George was employed for 22 years as the Office and Building Service Manager for Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Wilkes-Barre. Prior to that, he was employed for 18 years by the Kanaar Corporation, Kingston.
A devout Catholic, George was a longtime member of the former Holy Trinity Church, Swoyersville. Following the consolidation of his church, he became a member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Swoyersville.
Proud of his service to his country, George was a member of the American Legion, Post 945, Wormleysburg. He was also a member of the Pittston Senior Citizens, where he met his dear companion, the late Helen Drugotch Opsitos, at a Valentine’s Day dance, remaining each other’s valentine for 13 years.
George loved taking his daily two-mile walks, and tending to his yard. He was a hard worker who took great pride in all that he did! He was also an avid sports fan who enjoyed following professional football and golf.
In addition to his parents, George and Mary, and his wife, Cecilia, George was preceded in death by his beloved son, Mark Alan Haydu, who passed away on August 08, 1999; his brothers, Michael, Joseph, and John Haydu; his sister, Mary Yozwiak; and his companion of 13 years, Helen Drugotch Opsitos, who passed away on June 20, 2021.
George is survived by his sister, Dorothy Rice, Dallas; his brother, Thomas Haydu, Brick, New Jersey; as well as his numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Relatives and Friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral which will be conducted on Friday, January 07, 2022, at 9:30 AM, from the Wroblewski Funeral Home, Inc., 1442 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 AM in Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, 116 Hughes Street, Swoyersville, with the Reverend Joseph J. Pisaneschi, his Pastor, officiating.
Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in the Mount Olivet Roman Catholic Cemetery, Carverton section of Kingston Township, where Military Honors will be accorded by the United States Army.
Family and Friends are invited to George’s viewing which will be held on Thursday, January 06, 2022, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, at the funeral home.
