Francis L. “Roy” Baker Jr., 83, a resident of Swoyersville, passed into eternal life, surrounded by his loving family, on Monday evening, April 01, 2024, in the comfort of his home.
His loving wife is Joanne T. Robedda Baker, with whom he celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 21st.
Born on August 27, 1940, in Brooklyn, New York, Roy was the only child born to the late Francis L. Baker Sr. and Anna Puzinas Baker.
Raised in Brooklyn, Roy was a graduate of P.S. 151, Brooklyn, New York. Relocating to the Wyoming Valley with his family, he went on to attend Lackawanna College’s Police Academy, Scranton, where he acquired his Act 120.
Prior to his retirement in 2006, Roy was employed as a police officer for the Borough of Swoyersville. In his earlier years, he was employed by the former Rex Shoe Company, Swoyersville, and the former Brocca Manufacturing, Swoyersville.
Following his retirement, Roy went on to work part-time until the age of 76 as a security officer for the Choices Program through Commonwealth Health Systems.
A man of strong faith, Roy was a longtime member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Holy Trinity Church, Swoyersville, where he enjoyed helping in the kitchen at its annual bazaar and annual rummage sale.
Active within the local community, Roy served as past treasurer for over 25 years for the Fraternal Order of Police, Wyoming Valley Lodge 36, Hanover Township; served as past vice president of the Maltby Fire Company, Swoyersville; and served as past president and treasurer of the former Swoyersville Lions Club. Additionally, he was involved with local youth sports programs when his children were young.
Roy was fiercely patriotic, and an avid sports enthusiast, with the New York Mets being his all-time favorite team.
Family was the center of Roy’s life and he treasured every moment he shared with his loved ones, most especially the many beach vacations he shared with his family – they were some of the happiest moments in his life. When it came to his grandchildren, the love he had for each of them was boundless – they were truly the light of his life. The love and devotion he had for his wife, children, and grandchildren will be his lasting legacy.
In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his infant granddaughter, Carley Joanne Baker.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Joanne, and their four children, Mary Lynn Makar and her husband, Thomas, Wilkes-Barre; Anthony Baker and his wife, Margaret, Bethany Beach, Delaware; John Baker and his wife, Cindy, Swoyersville; and Kenneth Baker and his wife, Cecelia, Jamison; his twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; his nieces and nephews; and a host of friends, most especially his close family friends whom he regarded as family, Ed and Peggy Polney and their family, Swoyersville.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Roy’s viewing which will be held on Monday, April 08, 2024, from 9:30 to 11:00 AM in Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, 116 Hughes Street, Swoyersville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM with the Reverend Father John J. Chmil, his Pastor, officiating.
A private burial service for the immediate family will be in the Denison Cemetery, Swoyersville.
