Elizabeth “Bette” Sentigar, 91, a resident of Swoyersville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, April 19, 2017, at Kingston Health Care Center.
Her beloved husband was the late Michael Sentigar, who passed away on October 10, 1997. Michael and Bette were blessed to shared 54 wonderful years of marriage.
Born on August 20, 1925, in Jenkins Township, Bette was one of seven children born to the late Sylvester and Agnes (Coutts) Lewis.
An 89-year resident of Swoyersville, Bette was a graduate of the former Swoyersville High School, Class of 1943.
Bette was a lifelong member of Stella Presbyterian Church, Forty Fort.
Active in community affairs, Bette served as the Recording and Financial Secretary of the Maltby Fire Company’s Ladies Auxiliary, the Recording Secretary for the Swoyersville Junior Football’s “Pom-Pom” Girls, and also served as an ambulance attendant for the Swoyersville Community Ambulance Association.
In the late 1970’s, the Maltby Fire Company was one of the first to implement a junior firefighter program, and it was during this time that Bette’s husband, Michael, was the fire chief. Bette was fondly called “Ma Sentigar” by the junior firefighters, and whenever they needed pants hemmed or a patch sewn on their uniform, “Ma Sentigar” would drop whatever she was doing to help them. Today, those same firefighters, who are now in their 50’s, still refer to Bette as “Ma Sentigar”.
A woman of many enjoyments, Bette especially enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and reading mysteries and thrillers. She was also a diehard fan of the Penn State Nittany Lions.
In addition to her parents, Sylvester and Agnes Lewis, and her husband, Michael, Bette was preceded in death by her brothers, Andrew, Thomas, and Gerald Lewis; and her baby sister, Leona.
Bette is survived by her five children, Reverend Michael Sentigar, Tucson, Arizona; Cynthia Sentigar, Philadelphia; Veronica Koval and her husband, Raymond, Swoyersville; Lisa Konopka and her husband, John, Swoyersville; and Patricia Sentigar, with whom she resided; her seven grandchildren; her eight great-grandchildren (some of who called her “Nana the Great”); her one great-great granddaughter; her brother, Bryce Lewis, Shavertown; her sister, Barbara Coslosky, Luzerne; her numerous nieces and nephews; and her faithful companion, her dog, Daisy.
