Dorothy M. Shendock, 97, a former resident of Hughes Street, Swoyersville, passed into eternal life on Sunday morning, January 09, 2022, at Allied Services Meade Street Residence, Wilkes-Barre, where she had resided the past four years.
Her beloved husband was the late George J. Shendock who passed away on July 19, 1989. Together, George and Dorothy shared 41 wonderful years of marriage.
Born in 1924, in Swoyersville, Dorothy was one of six children born to the late George W. Nemetz Sr. and Theresa (Masonis) Nemetz.
Raised in Swoyersville, Dorothy was a graduate of the former Saint Mary’s High School, Wilkes-Barre, Class of 1942, and went on to further her education at the former Wilkes-Barre Business College.
Following her schooling, she worked as a clerk for her family business, Nemetz Bakery, formerly of Swoyersville. After raising her children, she resumed working outside the home for the former Grasso Pants Manufacturing, Plymouth, then subsequently at the former United Pants Factory, Swoyersville; the former Ann-Will Garment, Kingston; and the former G.T. Manufacturing, Courtdale.
Dorothy was a devout Catholic and a lifelong member of the former Holy Trinity Church, Swoyersville, where she held membership with its Confraternity of Christian Mother, and in her earlier years, was a den mother with the Holy Trinity Cub Scouts. She was proud that her grandfather, Michael Nemetz, was among the church’s early founders in 1895, and served on the church’s original Board of Directors. Following the consolidation of her church, she became a member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Swoyersville.
Active within her local community, Dorothy was a life-member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion, Andrew Lawrence Post 644, Swoyersville; and was a longtime member of the former Swoyersville Senior Citizens.
Dorothy had a great love for antique post cards throughout her life, amassing a nice collection. It was her love for antique post cards that led her to organize and serve as past-president of the Susquehanna Post Card Club, which, at one time, consisted of 26 collecting members. The Club met monthly for many years at the Hoyt Library, Kingston, where many outstanding collectors gave excellent presentations on their collections.
Dorothy also had a passion for oil painting, studying under the instruction of the late Lawrence Russo, Kingston. Her specialty was painting landscapes, and she gifted her family and friends many of her works over the years.
In addition to her parents, George and Theresa Nemetz, and her husband, George, Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved son, George M. Shendock, who passed away on June 05, 2014; her brothers, Edward Nemetz, George W. Nemetz Jr., and Richard Nemetz; and her sister, Evelyn Dougherty.
Dorothy is survived by her loving son, Robert G. Shendock, Chincoteague Island, Virginia; her sister, Eleanor Hudak, Jenkins Township; as well her numerous nieces and nephews.
