Deacon George Mochin Jr., 81, formerly of Shoemaker Street, Swoyersville, passed into eternal life on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at River View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Wilkes-Barre, where he was recently a guest.
His beloved wife was the former Kathleen G. “Kathy” Urban Mochin, who passed away on December 12, 2012. Together, George and Kathy shared 50 beautiful years of marriage.
Born on December 28, 1940, in Taylor, George was the only son born to the late George Mochin Sr. and Olga Kuzmich Mochin.
Raised in Taylor, George was a graduate of the former Taylor High School, Class of 1958. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Army, honorably serving his country for 4 years during peacetime, and attaining the rank of Specialist 4th Grade.
Prior to his retirement, George was employed as a maintenance supervisor for the former Saint Gabriel’s Monastery, Clarks Summit. He was also employed as a purchasing agent for Mercy Hospital, Scranton, for over 20 years, and in the same capacity for the former Nesbitt Memorial Hospital, Kingston.
A devout Catholic, George was called to serve the Lord as a Permanent Deacon for the Diocese of Scranton. Ordained to the Diaconate on November 27, 1999, he was assigned to his home parish, the former Holy Name – Saint Mary’s Parish Community, Swoyersville, the combined parish of Holy Name of Jesus Church and Saint Mary of Czestochowa Church. Upon the closing of Holy Name – Saint Mary’s Parish Community, he was assigned to the consolidated Parish of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, Swoyersville, and eventually transferred to Saint Monica’s Parish, West Wyoming, where he served the last year of his diaconate. Over his years as a Deacon, he touched the lives of countless people through his core values of service to family, faith, and community.
George was a 3rd Degree member of the Knight of Columbus, Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Council 12976, Swoyersville, and was also a longtime member of the Swoyersville Volunteer Hose Company #1, where he once served as assistant fire chief and treasurer.
In addition to his parents, George and Olga, and his wife, Kathy, George was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Mary “Midge” Urban Gregory.
George is survived by his three children, Dr. Chris Mochin, Harveys Lake, who was his devoted caregiver; Dr. Mark Mochin and his wife, Tonya, Las Vegas, Nevada; and Maria Mochin, Towson, Maryland; his nieces, Michelle Windwalker and her husband, Brian, Jackson Township; and Maureen Barber, Swoyersville.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral which will be conducted on Monday, July 25, 2022, at 9:15 AM from the Wroblewski Funeral Home, Inc., 1442 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 AM in Saint Monica’s Parish, Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 363 West 8th Street, West Wyoming. The Most Reverend Joseph C. Bambera, D.D., J.C.L., Bishop of the Diocese of Scranton, will be the celebrant, and the Reverend Louis A. Grippe will serve as homilist.
Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Swoyersville, where Military Honors will be accorded by the United States Army.
Family and friends are invited to attend George’s viewing which will be held on Sunday evening, July 24, 2022, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, at the funeral home.
