Charles J. Sahayda, 84, a resident of West Wyoming, passed into eternal life on Monday evening, May 06, 2024, at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township.
His loving wife is Mary Louise Benny Sahayda. Charles and Mary Lou would have celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on May 18th. They have been members of Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church, Wyoming, since 1971.
Born on February 28, 1940, in Wilkes-Barre, Charles was the only son born to the late Charles Sahayda and Mary Kopec Sahayda.
Raised in North Wilkes-Barre, Charles was a graduate of the former James M. Coughlin High School, Class of 1958.
A United States Air Force veteran, Charles honorably served his country as a radio specialist for four years during peacetime, and, upon his honorable discharge, he attained the rank of Airman 2nd Class. He was stationed at Misawa, Japan with the 6989th RSM and later at Dover Air Force Base, Delaware.
Prior to his retirement, Charles was employed as a state correctional officer at the State Correctional Institute – Retreat, Newport Township. In his earlier years, he was employed as a service technician for Golden Business Machines, Kingston.
An avid outdoorsman, Charles loved fly fishing and hunting, and was a loyal member of the Lehigh Sportsman’s Associates. When he wasn’t hunting or fishing, you could find him tending to his roses and ever-changing landscape projects.
Dunkin’ Donuts coffee and strawberry shortcake were staples in Charles’s life, and he never met a plate of spaghetti and meatballs he did not like. Nor would he pass up an opportunity to have lunch with his favorite brother-in-law, Marty, and friend, Wayne.
Above all, family came first in Charles’s life and he cherished every moment he shared with his loved ones. He adored his grandchildren and was blessed to play an active role in each of their lives. Although his presence will be missed beyond measure, his loved ones will treasure the last words he spoke to them, “be happy”, and know he will be with them along the trails and streams in the woods.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary Louise, and their daughter, Joann Monko and her husband, Robert, Orefield; three grandchildren, R.J. Monko and his fiancé, Sydney Sniezek; Emily Monko and her husband, Nick McTish; and Charlie Monko and his girlfriend, Jessica Snyder; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Macrina and Martin DiRoberto, Mountain Top; niece, Lisa Tower and her husband, Paul, Mountain Top; and great-nephew, Jacob Tower.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a memorial visitation which will be held on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the Wroblewski Funeral Home, Inc., 1442 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort, followed by a Blessing Service to be celebrated at 11:00 AM.
