Barbara C. Penkrot, 82, a resident of Shavertown, passed into eternal life, surrounded by her loving family, on Friday morning, May 05, 2023, at Allied Services Hospice, Wilkes-Barre, following a lengthy illness.
Her beloved husband was the late Leonard Penkrot who passed away on December 26, 2011. Leonard and Barbara were blessed to share 52 beautiful years of marriage.
Born on July 20, 1940, in Kingston, Barbara was one of three children born to the late Chester Gutowski and Jennie Polomski Gutowski.
Raised in Kingston, Barbara was a graduate of the former Kingston High School, Class of 1958.
Following high school, Barbara was employed for 10 years by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Education, and Welfare until the birth of her children, when she devoted her life to being a stay-at-home mom. After her children were raised, she became employed by the Mid America Group, Wilkes-Barre, serving as an administrative assistant for 14 years prior to her retirement.
Barbara was a longtime member of Holy Family Parish, Luzerne. She was also a member of the Serve Your City Club, Wilkes-Barre, serving two terms as president.
Family was the center of Barbara’s life and she treasured every moment she shared with her loved ones, most especially her grandchildren – they were the love of her life and each of them brought her immense joy. She was also blessed to share a close bond with her nieces, loving and treating them as if they were her own children. The love and care she bestowed upon her family in this life will be her lasting legacy, and that legacy will forever live on in the hearts of her beloved family.
In addition to her parents, Chester and Jennie Gutowski, and her husband, Leonard, Barbara was preceded in death by her brother, Stanley Gutowski; and her sister, Julie Mantione.
Barbara is survived by her two children, David Penkrot and his wife, Cathy, Wilmington, Delaware; and Amy Symeon, Shavertown; her four grandchildren, Amanda Penkrot, Michelle Penkrot, Michael Symeon, and Jack Symeon; her dear nieces, Nicole Mantione, Tessa Mantione, and Nina Mantione Altavilla; as well as several other nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and friends.
