Anthony John “Tony” Ponganis, 86, a lifelong resident of Kingston, passed into eternal life, surrounded by his loved ones, on Monday evening, April 27, 2026, in the comfort of his home following a devastating battle with Lewy Body Dementia.
His loving wife is Juliann Russell Ponganis with whom Tony would have celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary on October 31st.
Born on September 26, 1939, in Kingston, Tony was one of four children born to the late John P. Ponganis and Lottie L. Chesluk Ponganis.
A member of the first graduating class of the former West Side Central Catholic High School, Tony went on to honorably serve his country with the United States Army for two years during the Vietnam War as a military policeman at various bases across Germany. Upon his honorable discharge on March 25, 1965, he attained the rank of Private 1st Class.
Prior to his retirement, Tony was employed as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) for the Wesley Village Campus, Jenkins Township. There, he was honored as the inaugural recipient of the “CNA of the Year” award.
A man of faith, Tony was a member of Saint Ignatius Loyola Church, Kingston, and was a lifelong member of the former Saint Mary the Annunciation Church, Kingston, until its closure.
Tony was known to be an avid outdoorsman who greatly enjoyed hunting, fishing, and taking walks through nature, and was also known for his love of the old country music legends. Above all, his greatest passion in life was spending time with family – he always placed great importance on the value of family and maintaining good relationships with loved ones.
In addition to his parents, John and Lottie, Tony was preceded in death by his brothers, Mark and John Ponganis.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Juliann Ponganis; his sister, Mary Walters, Kingston; his five step-children, Daniel Clifford, Old Forge; Sean Clifford, Kingston; Patrick Clifford, Kingston; Kyle Clifford, West Pittston; and Julie Clifford, Courtdale; and his two step-grandchildren, Tristan Valenti, Kingston, and Lestat Valenti, who is currently serving with the U.S. Marine Corps on the East Coast.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Tony’s services which will begin with viewing on Friday, May 01, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Wroblewski Funeral Home, Inc., 1442 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort, and continue there on Saturday, May 02, 2026, at 9:20 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in Saint Ignatius Loyola Church, 339 North Maple Avenue, Kingston, with the Reverend Michael J. Boris, Assistant Pastor, officiating.
Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in Saint Mary the Annunciation Roman Catholic Cemetery, Pringle, where Military Honors will be accorded by the United States Army.
