Retired United States Navy Senior Chief, Anthony B. “Tex” Brown Jr., 89, a resident of Swoyersville, and formerly of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 9, 2015, at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Plains Township.
His loving wife is Adele A. (Salis) Brown. Together, Tony and Adele celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on June 30th.
Born on October 02, 1925, in Wilkes-Barre Township, Tony was the son of the late Anthony Brown Sr. and Justina (Popson) Brown.
Raised in Wilkes-Barre Township, Tony attended the former Wilkes-Barre Township High School.
A United States Navy veteran, Tony honorably served his country for 25 years. Tony was proud to serve during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. During World War II, he served aboard the USS Golden City, and was decorated with the Pacific Theatre Ribbon with 4 stars, the American Theatre Ribbon, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 stars. During the Korean War, he served aboard the USS Bisbee, and was decorated with 2 Korean Presidential Unit Citation Badges, and the Korean Navy Occupational Medal. During the Vietnam War, he was stationed at the Naval Communication Station in Naples, Italy. Throughout his Naval career, he was also decorated with the Naval Reserve Medal and 3 National Service Defense Medals. A proud veteran, Tony held membership with the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Fleet Reserve Association, and the Disabled American Veterans.
Following his retirement from the United States Navy, Tony and Adele settled in Charleston, South Carolina, where the resided for many years prior to returning to the Wyoming Valley.
For 17 years, Tony was employed by the Charleston Ship Yards, Charleston, South Carolina, where he worked as a dry dock operator. As a young man, he was employed by the former Leon Fernbaugh Silk Mill, Wilkes-Barre.
Tony was a member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Parish, Swoyersville.
In addition to his parents, Anthony and Justina Brown, Tony was preceded in death by his infant son, Mark A. Brown, who passed away in 1963; his infant sister who passed away in childbirth with his mother; his brother, John Brown; and his niece, Nancy Yencha.
In addition to his wife, Adele, Tony is survived by his son, Scott A. Brown and his wife, Rene Ann, Aiken, South Carolina; his grandchildren, Logan and Ashlon Brown; his brother, James Brown, Hunlock Creek; his sisters, Dolores Mrozinski and Marie Brown, both of Atlanta, Georgia; and Bernice Yencha, Plains Township; his many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and Friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral which will be conducted on Monday, July 13, 2015, at 9:30 AM from the Wroblewski Funeral Home, Inc., 1442 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 AM in Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, 116 Hughes Street, Swoyersville, with the Reverend Joseph J. Pisaneschi, his Pastor, officiating.
Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Hanover Township, where Military Honors will be accorded by the United States Navy.
