Anna F. Stefanko, 98, a longtime resident of Swoyersville, passed into eternal life on Sunday morning, January 29, 2023, at Kingston Health Care Center, where she was a guest since June of 2019.
Her beloved husband was the late Leonard P. Stefanko, who passed away on March 26, 2004. Leonard and Anna were blessed to shared 57 beautiful years of marriage.
Born on July 25, 1924, in Swoyersville, Anna was one of nine children born to the late John Konopka and Mary Rozmus Konopka.
Anna was a graduate of the former Swoyersville High School, Class of 1941.
Prior to their retirement in 1998, Leonard and Anna were owners of the former West Side Rug Company, Swoyersville, for 51 years.
A devout Catholic, Anna was a lifelong member of the former Saint Mary of Czestochowa Church, Swoyersville, where she and her husband were active with the church’s annual bazaar, with Anna always managing the large plush stand. Following the consolidation of her church, she became a member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Swoyersville.
Renowned by her family for her piggies, nut and poppy seed rolls, and grilled cheese sandwiches, Anna was also an avid gardener who especially enjoyed tending to her tomato garden, always using her harvest to make her famous tomato juice and chili sauce. She was a great fan of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, and was an avid bowler, once appearing on WNEP’s “Bowling for Dollars”. Some of her other enjoyments were playing Bingo and Pokeno, and going on trips to Reading, PA; Virginia; and the Caribbean Islands.
Above all, her family was the greatest treasure in her life. She will always be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
In addition to her parents, John and Mary Konopka, and her husband, Leonard, Anna was preceded in death by her great-granddaughter, Isla Monroe Yurko; and her eight siblings, Anthony, Phillip, and John Konopka; Sophie Patterson, Caroline Rakos, Josephine Cegelka, Nellie Zannetti, and Mary Cebrick.
Anna is survived by her children, Maryann Yurko and her husband, Emery Yurko III, Kingston Township; and Ralph Stefanko and his wife, Elaine, Larksville; her grandchildren, Emery Yurko IV and his wife, Jill; Rebecca Yurko Reinert and her husband, Matthew; and Kevin Yurko and his wife, Erin; her great-grandchildren, Nora, Paige, Ella, Emery V, Rowan, Henry, and Sloane Yurko; as well as generations of nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend their sincerest gratitude to the administration and staff of Kingston Health Care Center, both present and former, most especially Ruth, Carol, Candy, Cindi, and Renee. Their kindness helped Anna endure the fears and loneliness arising from the pandemic, and the compassion and respect they bestowed upon Anna and her family made the end of her life easier. The family would also like to thank the staff of the Hospice of the Sacred Heart for all they did to help make Anna’s final days comfortable.
