Sandra L. “Sandy” Kuhar, 77, a resident of Swoyersville, passed quietly into eternal life with her loving daughters at her side on Monday evening, February 10, 2025, in the comfort of her home.
She is happily reunited with her beloved husband of nearly 55 years, Joseph A. Kuhar, who passed away on July 26, 2023. With Sandy and Joe being joined at the hip throughout their years together, when she received her diagnosis of aggressive cancer less than a month ago, she was comforted knowing she would be rejoining Joe in heaven.
Born on February 28, 1947, in Kingston, Sandy was one of two children born to the late Michael Metroka and Helen Polk Metroka.
Raised in Kingston, as a young girl her parents enrolled her in the David Blight School of Dance where she excelled in tap dance and had dreams of dancing with the Rockette’s. She was a graduate of the former Kingston High School, Class of 1965.
Prior to her retirement, Sandy was employed as a housekeeper for the priests serving the former Roman Catholic Community of North Wilkes-Barre at Sacred Heart Slovak Church and Saint Andre Bessette Parish. In her earlier years, she worked in the same capacity at the former Saint Anthony of Padua Church, Larksville, and as a media advertising specialist for the former Lynn Advertising, Kingston.
Sandy was a faithful Catholic and a member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Holy Trinity Church, Swoyersville, where she was actively involved with the preparation and execution of the parish’s annual bazaar, as well as countless parish food fundraisers. Most notably helping to make pizza, pagach, and pirohy, Sandy, along with her husband, Joe, did all they could to make every parish event a success. When she wasn’t helping to prepare food for church fundraisers, “Mrs. Kuhar” served as the right-hand woman to her dear friend and “Sonny Boy,” Richard Nemetz, helping him with his food sales business.
An actively involved mother, Sandy served as the past PTA President at Dana Street Elementary School during the years her daughters attended grade school. As her grandchildren came along, “Maw,” as they called her, was just as actively involved in their lives, moving heaven and earth to spend time with them! Rarely missing any of their sporting events, she was always their biggest fan, and was even known as “Maw” by all their fellow teammates.
Always exuding kindness, Sandy gave of herself freely, unselfishly, and without reservation. Possessing the beautiful gift of making friends wherever she went, if you were befriended by her, she instantly became your biggest fan and your greatest cheerleader. She was, without a doubt, a model of Christ’s love.
Although Sandy’s family and friends will remember her best for her bubbly and outgoing personality, boundless heart, and helping hand, her family will also remember her appreciation of piping hot cup of coffee; the daily walks she enjoyed with her beloved Joe; her signature golden tan; her skill with crafting; and her love of vacationing in Cape May, New Jersey.
In addition to her parents, Michael and Helen Metroka, and her husband, Joseph, Sandy was preceded in death by her brother, Michael J. Metroka, who was killed in car accident while serving as a deputy sheriff in Florida; her brother-in-law, Gerald Kuhar, and her sister-in-law, Mary Anne Zedolik.
Left to cherish Sandy’s memory are her daughters, Robyn Caiazzo and her husband, Russell, York; and Dawn Wenzel and her husband, Ethan, Mountaintop; her grandchildren, Delainy Ogurkis, Bryce Wenzel, Ella Caiazzo, and Braxtyn Wenzel; her brothers-in-law, John Kuhar and his wife, Carole, Shavertown; Thomas Kuhar and his wife, Roseann, Mountaintop; and John Zedolik; her sisters-in-law, Elaine Pugliese and her husband, Michael, West Pittston; and Joan Kuhar, Mountaintop; as well as her numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral which will be conducted on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at 10:00 AM from the Wroblewski Funeral Home, Inc., 1442 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:30 AM in Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, 116 Hughes Street, Swoyersville, with her nephew, the Reverend Father Jonathan P. Kuhar, Pastor of Saint Teresa of Calcutta Parish, Scranton, officiating.
Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in the Denison Cemetery, Swoyersville.
Family and friends are invited to attend Sandy’s viewing which will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, at the funeral home.
