Philomena Bridget Ann Cassidy Conrad, 94, a resident of South Wilkes-Barre, passed into the arms of her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Saturday morning, June 08, 2024, in the comfort of her home, following a brief illness.
Born on March 22, 1930, in Larksville, Philomena was one of five children born to the late William Cassidy and Gertrude Brown Cassidy Conwell.
Spending her early years in Larksville, her family eventually settled in Wilkes-Barre. In 1935, her father and brother, Thomas, drowned in the Susquehanna River after the 9-year-old boy slipped off the embankment they were standing on overlooking the high waters and her father jumped in an attempt to save him.
Leaving school early to help her mother, Philomena went on to work for King’s College for nearly twenty years – she was proud to be a part of the King’s College community. She also served as a personal caregiver for Mr. Weiss, and Mrs. Gonsher, who both resided in Kingston.
A devout Catholic, Philomena was a member of Saint Nicholas Church, Wilkes-Barre. She was also a social member of the Saint Conrad’s Society and the North End Slovak Citizens Club, both of Wilkes-Barre. She was very active in the Democratic Party throughout her life.
When Philomena entered a room, it lit up with her bright and cheerful personality! She loved to socialize and others were naturally drawn to her – perhaps her unmatched wittiness or her ability to tell you what she honestly thought was the drawing force! In all aspects of her life, she was loving, kind-hearted, and cared for her family and friends with her whole heart.
In addition to her parents, Philomena was preceded in death by her former husband, Louis J. Conrad Jr.; son, Thomas Conrad and his wife, Tamison Snow; grandson, Dean Gray; brothers, Thomas and Joseph Cassidy; sisters, Dolores Cassidy and Mary Agnes Emmett; and step-father, Edward Conwell.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Paul Conrad, Wilkes-Barre; Glenn Conrad and wife, Michelle, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; Christopher Conrad and wife, Mary, and their daughter, Ava, Wilkes-Barre; Colleen Conrad and husband, José Hidalgo, San Francisco, California; and Timothy Conrad and wife, Christine, and their children, Christian, Jonah, Josiah, Evangeline, Zechariah, Naomi, and Kyrie, Kingston; as well as two nieces; generations of great-nieces and great-nephews; cousins; many, many dear friends; and her beloved tuxedo cat, Bootsie.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral which will be conducted on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at 9:15 AM from the Wroblewski Funeral Home, Inc., 1442 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 AM in Saint Nicholas Church, 226 South Washington Street, Wilkes-Barre.
Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in Saint Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Cemetery, Larksville.
Family and friends are invited to attend Philomena’s viewing which will be held on Monday, June 17, 2024, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, at the funeral home.
