Nancy J. Kachurak, 84, a resident of Swoyersville, went home to be with her Lord, surrounded by her loved ones, on Friday afternoon, April 25, 2025, in the comfort of her home.
Her loving husband is David W. Kachurak, with whom Nancy would have celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary on July 23rd.
Born on March 02, 1941, in Wilkes-Barre, Nancy was one of eleven children born to the late George W. Atherholt and Eleanor E. Lutz Atherholt, and was the last surviving member of her parent’s children.
Raised in the Heights section of Wilkes-Barre, Nancy was a graduate of G.A.R. Memorial High School, Class of 1959.
Prior to her retirement in 1996, Nancy was employed for twenty years by the former Valley Crest Nursing Home, Wilkes-Barre, starting there as a nurse’s aide and retiring at the position of clinical supervisor. Following her retirement, she kept busy working part-time as an administrative assistant at both Kings College and for Dr. Fred Lombardo, and as a child care provider at the YMCA, Wilkes-Barre, all while babysitting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
An incredible woman of faith, Nancy shared the good news of her Lord and Savior with all she encountered. She was a faithful member of Cherry Street Bible Church, Plymouth, holding membership with its women’s group “Encourage” and serving as a past member of its former choir.
Within her family, she was famous for her delicious pasties as well as her chocolate chip and Welsh cookies, and her knack for keeping an immaculately clean home and decorating for every holiday and season. She cherished traveling with her family, and felt blessed to visit many destinations around the world with her son, David, and his wife, Donnalea.
The love Nancy had for her family was immeasurable and she treasured having her family gathered together. Although her presence will be deeply missed, her family is grateful for the Godly direction she gave them – that is the greatest part of the legacy she leaves behind.
In addition to her parents, George and Eleanor Atherholt, Nancy was preceded in death by her brothers, infant James, Roy, George, and Warren Atherholt; and her sisters, infant Edna Atherholt, Eleanor Bromfield, Majel Fesel, Lois George, Phyllis Mosley, and Mildred Davis.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, David W. Kachurak; her three children, Robert J. Thomas and his wife, Beverly, Swoyersville; Dr. David H. Thomas and his wife, Donnalea, Vineland, New Jersey; and Lynda E. Brezna and her longtime companion, Thomas Rogan, Luzerne; her four grandchildren, Jessica L. DeAngelo and her husband, Thomas, Trucksville; Nicole L. McGovern and her husband, AJ, Lawton, Oklahoma; Amanda A. Anderson and her husband, Keith, Danbury, Connecticut; and Amber Lyn Brezna and her fiancé, Dan Chmiola, Hanover Township; her nine great-grandchildren; as well as generations of nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.
Nancy’s family would like to thank ALS United Mid-Atlantic, Penn State Hershey Medical Center Neurology Department, and Compassus Hospice for their compassion and outstanding care given during the last year.
