Marie A. Nevolas, 96, formerly of Shoemaker Street, Swoyersville, passed quietly into eternal life on Wednesday, May 07, 2025, at the Highland Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Exeter, where she had been a guest for the past three years.
Born on June 17, 1928, in Swoyersville, Marie was one of two daughters born to the late Joseph Nevolas and Anna Susan Frohman Nevolas.
Raised in Swoyersville, Marie received her early education at Saint John Nepomucene Grade School, Luzerne, and was a graduate of the former Saint Cecelia’s High School, Exeter, Class of 1946. Following high school, she went on to further her education at College Misericordia, now Misericordia University, Dallas, where, in 1951, she acquired her Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education.
Prior to her retirement in 1990, Marie was employed for 23 years as an elementary school teacher for the Wilkes-Barre Area School District, with most of those years being spent at Kistler Elementary School. Prior to that, she taught for many years in Westfield, New Jersey, and at the Alfred I. DuPont Elementary School, Wilmington, Delaware. In her retirement years, she volunteered at the Daniel J. Flood Elementary School, Wilkes-Barre, until macular degeneration sadly took her sight. Marie’s passion for education was evident by the way she treated her profession as a vocation. Showering her students with love and affirmation, she reveled in hearing from many of them over the years and was proud of each of their accomplishments.
Professionally, Marie was a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association; the Luzerne County Education Society; and the Wilkes-Barre Schools Women’s Club, serving as Past President.
A woman of profound faith, Marie was a lifelong member of the former Saint Mary of Czestochowa Church, Swoyersville, where she served as a Religious Education Instructor; was a member of the church choir; was an active volunteer with its annual bazaar; and, in her earlier years, was a member of its Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality. Following the consolidation of her church, she became a member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Swoyersville.
For decades, Marie was actively involved with the Girl Scouts of America serving as District Director of the West Side and as Assistant Camp Director at both Camp Onawandah, Tunkhannock, and Camp Lake Como, Hancock, New York, where she also served as golf instructor.
In addition to her parents, Joseph and Anna Susan Nevolas, Marie was preceded in death by her only sister, Margaret M. Nevolas, who passed away on April 26, 2018.
Left to cherish Marie’s memory are several cousins and many dear friends.
