Joanne Theresa Baker, 79, a resident of Swoyersville, passed into eternal life, surrounded by her loving family, early Saturday morning, June 29, 2024, at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Inpatient Unit, Dunmore.
Her beloved husband was the late Francis L. “Roy” Baker Jr., who passed away on April 01, 2024. Together, Roy and Joanne celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 22, 2023.
Born on January 28, 1945, in Swoyersville, Joanne was one of five daughters born to the late John Robedda and Dorothy Sokolski Robedda.
Residing in Swoyersville most of her life, Joanne was a graduate of the former Swoyersville High School, Class of 1962.
Joanne was employed in the general ledger department of the former Hanover Bank, later Summit Bank, retiring from there. Prior to that, she was employed as an evening bookkeeper for the former United Penn Bank.
A devout Catholic, Joanne was an active, longtime member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Holy Trinity Church, Swoyersville, holding membership with and serving as past treasurer of its Confraternity of Christian Mothers, and serving as an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist. Joanne loved helping in the kitchen at her church’s annual bazaar, as well as working alongside her fellow Christian Mothers at their annual rummage sale.
Active within the local community, Joanne volunteered for many years at Dan Flood Grade School, Wilkes-Barre, through the Foster Grandparent Program, and was a past member of the former Swoyersville Lions Club. Additionally, she was involved with local youth sports programs when her children were young.
Joanne’s life centered around her beloved family and she cherished every moment she shared with her loved ones, most especially the many beach vacations she shared with her family – they were some of the happiest moments in her life. When it came to her grandchildren, the love she had for each of them was boundless, and she treasured her role in helping raise them alongside their parents – they were, without a doubt, the light of her life. The love and devotion Joanne had for her husband, children, and grandchildren will be her greatest, lasting legacy.
In addition to her parents, John and Dorothy Robedda, and her husband, Roy, Joanne was preceded in death by her infant granddaughter, Carley Joanne Baker; and her sisters, Geraldine Margallis and Dolores Paratore.
Left to cherish her memory are her four children, Mary Lynn Makar and her husband, Thomas, Wilkes-Barre; Anthony Baker and his wife, Margaret, Bethany Beach, Delaware; John Baker and his wife, Cindy, Swoyersville; and Kenneth Baker and his wife, Cecelia, Jamison; her twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; her sisters, Mary Ann Hudick and her husband, Joseph, Mountain Top; and Katherine Bankovich, West Wyoming; her nieces and nephews; and a host of friends, most especially her close family friends whom she regarded as family, Ed and Peggy Polney and their family, Swoyersville.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Joanne’s viewing which will be held on Tuesday, July 09, 2024, from 9:30 to 11:00 AM in Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, 116 Hughes Street, Swoyersville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM with the Reverend Father John J. Chmil, her Pastor, officiating.
The Confraternity of Christian Mothers of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish will recite the Rosary on Tuesday morning at 9:00 AM in the church.
A private burial service for the immediate family will be in the Denison Cemetery, Swoyersville.
