Janet Govier Hovanec, 89, of Swoyersville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.
Her beloved husband of 67 years was the late Francis S. Hovanec who passed away on February 05, 2025.
Born in London, England, Janet was one of two children of the late Thomas Govier and Anne Capeart Govier.
Raised and educated in the Wembley neighborhood of London, Janet came to the United States with her husband, Francis, and considered her proudest roles to be that of an Air Force spouse and mother. She supported Francis across multiple postings in the United States and England for more than 20 years and was later honored to have become an American citizen.
Janet built a long and rewarding career in the banking industry, most notably with PNC Bank, where she was a teller and customer service representative. A loving mother, sister, grandmother, and aunt, Janet will always be remembered as a friend to all who knew her.
Never one to be idle, Janet was a master knitter, quilter and baker of the best cherry pies with cherries fresh from her backyard. In retirement, she dedicated her time as a volunteer at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, Physicians Regional Hospital in Naples, Florida, and as a classroom reader in the Collier County Public Schools. She was a longtime member and past officer of the local chapter of the Transatlantic Brides and Parents Association. For 30 winters, Janet and her husband enjoyed traveling to Naples, Florida, where they spent happy days at the beach, cruising, and sharing time with dear friends.
In addition to her parents, Thomas and Anne Govier, and her husband, Francis, Janet was preceded in death by her brother, Eric Govier.
Left to cherish her memory are her two children: daughter, Carolyn Hovanec Lalos and husband, Dr. Alexander Lalos, Clarks Summit; and son, Stephen Hovanec and wife, Lorianne Allen Hovanec, Swoyersville. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Alexandra Lalos Church and husband, Kyle, Ann Arbor, Michigan; and Stephanie Lalos Gray and husband, Chris, and great-grandson, Riley Francis Gray, Raleigh, North Carolina; along with many nieces and nephews in the U.S. and England.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the caring staff of Second Family Memory Care Center, Wilkes-Barre; Tiffany Court at Kingston; and Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore, as well as Janet’s trusted aide, Bonnie, for their compassionate support.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a memorial visitation on Thursday, February 26, 2026, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Wroblewski Funeral Home, Inc., 1442 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort.
A private memorial service and burial will be held on Friday at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
