Irene P. Gulla, 96, a resident of Swoyersville, passed into eternal life on Friday afternoon, October 09, 2020, at Highland Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Exeter, where she was a guest for the past two weeks.
Her beloved husband was the late Joseph J. Gulla, who passed away on August 12, 2012. Together, Joseph and Irene were blessed to share 51 beautiful years of marriage.
Born on August 11, 1924, in Swoyersville, Irene was one of nine children born to the late Peter and Victoria Sobolewski Rydzewski (Regeski).
Raised in Swoyersville, Irene was a graduate of the former Swoyersville High School, Class of 1942. Following high school, she went on to attend beauty school, receiving her cosmetology certification.
A homemaker most of her life, Irene was employed as a hairdresser in her earlier years for the Globe Department Store, Scranton, and Mr. Dan’s Beauty Salon, Scranton. Additionally, she proudly worked as a “Rosie the Riveter” during World War II.
A devout Catholic and daily communicant, Irene was a longtime member of the former Holy Trinity Church, Swoyersville, and held membership with its Altar and Rosary Society and Choir. Active within her church, Irene volunteered for many years making pirohy for the church’s annual bazaar. Following the consolidation of her church, she became a member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Swoyersville.
In addition to her parents, Peter and Victoria Rydzewski, and her husband, Joseph, Irene was preceded in death by her brothers, Benjamin Regeski, Edward Regeski, Walter Regeski, and Floyd Regeski; and her sisters, Lillian Houck, Eugenia Gulitis, Evelyn Brennan, and Cecelia Skiendziel.
Irene is survived by her twenty-one nieces and nephews; countless great-nieces and great-nephews; and her brother-in-law, Thomas Gulla and his wife, Rosalie, South Carolina.
