Edward J. Stofko, 87, a resident of Swoyersville, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, December 14, 2013, at Kingston Health Care Center, Kingston, where he was recently a guest.
His beloved wife was the late Suzanna B. (Griczen) Stofko, who passed away on October 07, 2010. Together, Edward and Suzanna shared 60 beautiful years of marriage.
Born on July 30, 1926, in Swoyersville, Edward was the son of the late Louis and Agnes (Koscho) Stofko.
Raised in Swoyersville, Edward was a graduate of the former Swoyersville High School, Class of 1944.
A United States Navy Veteran, Edward honorably served his country during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Starlight and the U.S.S. Bexar. During his time of service, he was decorated with the Pacific Theatre Medal, the American Theatre Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Upon his honorable discharge on May 30, 1946, Edward had attained the rank of Radioman 3rd Class.
Upon his return home from the war, Edward worked in the local coal mining industry for twenty years. He then went on to work as a foreman and dynamite blaster for the former T.C. Lloyd Construction Company, eventually retiring from Asplundh.
Edward was a faithful Catholic and lifelong member of the former Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Swoyersville. Following the consolidation of his church, he became a member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Swoyersville. He was also a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Assumpta Council 3987, Luzerne.
A proud veteran, Edward was a member of the Catholic War Veterans, Memorial Post 1601, Swoyersville, where he served for many years as their welfare officer. Additionally, he was a life member of the American Legion, Andrew Lawrence Post 644, Swoyersville and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 283, Kingston.
Edward held membership with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1319, Wilkes-Barre and was also a member of various social clubs throughout the local area.
Family was the center of Edward’s life and he cherished every moment he had with his loved ones. He will forever be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
In addition to his parents, Louis and Agnes Stofko, and his wife, Suzanna, Edward was preceded in death by his infant brother, Michael Stofko; his brother, Louis Stofko; his sisters, Helen Breya and Agnes Kester.
Edward is survived by his children, Edward F. Stofko and his wife Dee, of Dallas, Texas; Michael A. Stofko, of Wilkes-Barre; Susann A. Stofko and Adrienne Gonda, of Swoyersville; and Jeanette Tlucek, of Thompson Station, Tennessee; his grandchildren, Andrew Stofko, Alexandra Stofko, Kate Stofko, Joseph Tlucek and Colleen Tlucek; his sister, Anna Mae Zielinski, of Endicott, New York; many nieces, nephews and friends.
Relatives and Friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral which will be conducted on Monday, December 23, 2013, at 9:30 AM from the Wroblewski Funeral Home, Inc., 1442 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 AM in Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, 116 Hughes Street, Swoyersville, with the Reverend Joseph J. Pisaneschi, his Pastor, officiating.
Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Cemetery, Swoyersville, where Military Honors will be accorded by the United States Navy.
Family and Friends are invited to call on Sunday, December 22, 2013, from 3:00 to 6:00 PM, at the funeral home.
